The Stormlight Archive series by Brandon Sanderson began with the 2010 release of The Doomed Kingdom. The development of an epic story, as well as answers to many questions await you in the long-awaited sequel - Words of Radiance.

Six years ago, the Assassin in White, a mercenary of the mysterious Parshendi, killed the Alethi king on the very night that a feast was held to celebrate the signing of the agreement between humans and Parshendi. The Crown Princes of Alethkar, united by the Pact of Vengeance, began the War of Retribution against the Parshendi.

Now the Killer has shown himself again. He kills rulers throughout Roshar, using his incomprehensible abilities to kill guards and hide from his pursuers. Among his primary targets is Crown Prince Dalinar, reputedly representing the true power behind the Alethi throne. His leading role in the war might seem like sufficient motive for elimination, but the Slayer's master has much more compelling reasons.

Contrary to the expectations of his enemies, Kaladin did not die the miserable death of a war slave, but survived to become head of the royal guard, a controversial position for a dark-eyed lowborn. Now he must protect the king and Dalinar from any danger, including the vague threat of the Assassin in White. At the same time, Kaladin is secretly trying to develop his amazing new abilities, which are somehow connected to his Force honorspren.

Quick-witted but weighed down by the weight of the past, Shallan moves along a parallel path. Despite the experience, which she refuses to admit, the girl took on an unbearable burden: to somehow prevent the return of the legendary Void Bringers and the ensuing Devastation that threatens the end of civilization. The secrets you seek are hidden in the Shattered Plains, but getting there is much more difficult than it might seem at first glance.

Meanwhile, in the heart of the Shattered Plains, the Parshendi make a landmark decision. Under pressure from years of attacks by the Alethi, their war leader Eshonai manages to convince his people to risk everything in a desperate attempt to defeat the enemy, enlisting supernatural powers from which they once already fled. The possible consequences for humans and Parshendi, however, as well as for all of Roshar, are as dangerous as they are unpredictable.

This cycle was restarted by the publishing house "Azbuka", at the moment the first volume of "The Way of Kings" and the second volume of "The Word of Radiance" translated by N. Osoyanu have been published.

In our translation, the names and titles correspond, with rare exceptions, to the old translation of the first volume of "The Doomed Kingdom" by A. Virokhovsky. This was done so that the reader would not be rejected; translation from the "ABC" did not yet exist.

Further translation of this cycle by our team is not planned. Of course, if suddenly "Azbuka" does not abandon the cycle 🙂

DEDICATION

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

As you can imagine, releasing a book from the Stormlight Archive is a big deal. It took almost eighteen months of writing - from the general outline to the final version - and includes illustrations by four different artists and editorial revisions by a number of people, not to mention the Tor publishing team that handled production, publishing, marketing and everything else that it takes a big book to be popular.

For about two decades, the Stormlight Archive has been a dream of mine, a story I've always wanted to tell. The people you will read about below literally make my dreams come true and there are no words to express my gratitude for their efforts. First in line for this novel should be my assistant and permanent editor-in-chief, who still does this job, Peter Ahlstrom. He spent long hours working on the book, withstanding my constant stubbornness when I disagreed that some things did not fit together - and ultimately convinced me that I was wrong more often than I was right.

As always, Moshe Feeder - the man who discovered me as a writer - did excellent editorial work on the book. Joshua Bilmes, my agent, worked hard on the book as both agent and editor. He is joined by Eddie Schneider, Brady "Words of Brady" McReynolds, Christina Lopez, Sam Morgan and Christa Atkinson at the agency. Tom Doherty at Tor put up with the fact that I turned in the book even longer than the last one, although he promised to make it faster. Terry McGarry did the technical editing, Irene Gallo is the cover art, Greg Collins is the interior designer, Brian Lipofsky's team at Westchester Publishing Services is the layout, Meryl Gross and Carl Gold are the production, Patty Garcia and her team are the publicity. Paul Stevens acted like a superman every time we needed him. Big thanks to all of you.

You may have noticed that this volume, like the previous one, includes amazing images. I've always seen The Stormlight Archive as a series that goes beyond the general artistic expectations for a book of this class. So it's a great honor to be working again with my favorite artist, Michael Whelan, involved in the project. I feel that his cover did a great job capturing Kaladin's image, and I really appreciate the extra time he spent on the cover - at his own insistence - going through three drafts before being satisfied with the result. The shallan on the endpapers is more than what I had hoped for in this book, and I was amazed at how well the drawings came out.

When I was thinking about The Stormlight Archive, I said that it would be nice to have artists here and there doing drawings for the book - "guest stars". And in this novel, for the first time we have such a person - Dan dos Santos (another one of my personal favorite artists and the person who did the cover for Warbreaker), who agreed to do some internal illustrations.

Ben McSweeney has graciously returned to do some amazing album pages for us and he is a pure pleasure to work with. He quickly understood what I wanted, in some cases - even when I was in doubt about what I wanted, and I rarely met a person who combines talent and professionalism in such a way as Ben. You can find more of his work at InkThinker.net.

A long time ago, almost ten years ago, I met a man named Isaac Stewart, who, in addition to being an aspiring writer, was an excellent artist, especially when it came to things like maps and symbols. I started collaborating with him on books (starting with Mistborn) and he eventually helped me set up a blind date with a woman named Emily Bushman, whom I later married. So, needless to say, I owe Isaac a few big thanks. With each successive book he works on, these debts on my part keep growing as I see the amazing work he has done. This year we decided to make his participation a little more official and I hired him full time to be the in-house artist and help me with administrative tasks. So, if you see him, invite him to the team. (And tell him to keep working on his own books, which are quite good.)

Also at Dragonsteel Entertainment, Kara Stewart, Isaac's wife, has joined us as Delivery Manager. (In fact, I first tried to hire Kara, and Isaac dropped the remark that he could do some of the things I wanted to hire her for. I ended up getting them both on very good terms.) She's the one with who will you interact with if you order t-shirts, posters, etc. through my website. And she's amazing.

In this book, we have used the services of several expert consultants, including Matt Bushman, to review the songs and poetry. Ellen Asher provided some valuable guidance on the horse scenes, and Karen Ahlstrom was an additional poetry and song consultant. Michelle Walker acted as a consultant on the Alethi script. Finally, Elise Warren has some very good points about the psychology of the key characters. Thank you all for giving me your brains.

This book has had extensive pre-reading within strict time frames, and thus the bridgeman's heartfelt salute goes to those involved: Jason Denzel, Michelle Walker, Josh Walker, Eric Lake, David Behrens, Joel Phillips, Jory Phillips, Christina Kugler, Lindsay Luther, Kim Garrett, Lane Garrett, Brian Delambre, Brian T. Hill, Alice Arneson, Bob Klutz and Nathan Goodrich.

Correction in Tor involved: Ed Champman, Brian Connolly and Norma Hoffman. The proofreading community includes: Adam Wilson, Aubrey & Bao Pam, Blue Cole, Chris King, Chris Beak, Emily Grange, Gary Singer, Jacob Remick, Jared Jerlak, Kelly Neyma, Kendra Wilson, Kerry Morgan, Maren Menke, Matt Hatch, Patrick More, Richard Fife, Rob Harper, Steve Godek, Steve Karam and Will Raboyne.

My writing group managed to get to about the middle of the book, which is a lot considering how long the novel is. They are my invaluable resource. Members: Kaylynn ZoBell, Kathleen Dorsey Sanderson, Daniella Olsen, Ben-Son-Son-Ron, E.J. Patten, Alan Layton, and Karen Ahlstrom.

And finally, thanks to my loving (and restless) family. Joel, Dollin, and little Oliver keep me humble every day, always pushing me to be the “bad guy” who gets punished. Thank you to my indulgent wife, Emily, who has come to terms with a lot over the past year when trips have gotten longer and I'm still not sure I deserved it. Thank you all for filling my world with magic.

PROLOGUE. Ask

Six years ago

Jasnah Kholin pretended to enjoy the party, making no sign of her intention to kill one of the guests.

She strode through the crowded banqueting hall, listening to the crowd of people whose tongues were already beginning to loosen their tongues and cloud their heads. Her uncle Dalinar had just reached the extreme point of this state. Rising from the king's table, he shouted to the Parshendi to carry their drums. Elhokar, Jasnah's brother, rushed to pacify his uncle, though the Alethi politely ignored Dalinar's outburst. Everyone except Elokar's wife, Esudan, who giggled softly behind her handkerchief.

Jasnah turned away from the king's table and continued on her way. She had an appointment with an assassin, and she really enjoyed the opportunity to leave the stuffy hall, filled with an eerie mixture of all kinds of aromas. On a dais by the fireplace, a women's quartet played flutes, but the music had long worn everyone out.

Unlike Dalinar, Jasnah drew attention to herself. The eyes of others constantly pursuing her were like flies sticking to rotten meat, and the whispers were like the buzzing of wings. If there was one thing that pleased the Alethi court more than wine, it was gossip. Everyone expected Dalinar to get drunk during the holiday, but the king's daughter confessing to heresy is indeed an unprecedented case.

This, in fact, was what Jasnah was counting on when she talked about her beliefs.

She passed the Parshendi delegation, which was located in the immediate vicinity of the royal table. The sounds of their rhythmic speech reached her ears. Despite the fact that the celebration was dedicated to them and the agreement they had made with Jasna's father, none of the Parshendi looked happy or even pleased. They were rather nervous. However, they did not belong to the human race, and for this reason, their behavior sometimes seemed strange.
