Following the 9th hour. The order of the ninth hour. glory, and now

The Liturgical Hours (services of the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th hours) is a special rite of prayers that is read in the temple at a certain time and established by the Church to commemorate certain sacred events. There are 1st, 3rd, 6th and 9th hours. At the 1st hour, the expulsion of Adam and Eve from paradise and the presence of Christ at the trial of Caiaphas are remembered, at the 3rd hour the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles, at the 6th the crucifixion of the Savior, and at the 9th - His death on the cross.

Usually this is a rather short rank, reading and listening to which does not take more than 15-20 minutes.

It seems to me that the emergence of the prayer books of the Hours in the Old Testament and New Testament Churches is connected primarily with the Divine establishment of a person's habit of uninterrupted prayer. After all, in essence, the Angels and saints in paradise are in continuous praise to the Lord. Figuratively speaking, in the Kingdom of Heaven, in His exalted and spiritual temple, worship is constantly going on. And in order for a person to acquire the habit of this heavenly uninterrupted prayer, he acquires it even here - in earthly life. Hence the divine services of the hours at a certain time.

This can be compared to a monastic meal. So that the monk does not plunge headlong into the absorption of food, the meal is interrupted somewhere in the middle by the sound of a bell. Everyone gets up. They are baptized. A short prayer is said. Then they sit down again and eat food. By doing this, a person seems to be knocked out of the earthly rut, out of mental and heart concentration on his stomach, and again learns to fix his attention on the higher - on the heavenly.

Watch, I think have the same function - to distract a person's attention from the material concerns of the day. And turn your eyes to the Lord God.

The fact that the Old Testament Church knew the divine services of the hours is testified to by the first chapters of the Book of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke, Acts of the Holy Apostles: “Peter and John went together to the temple at the ninth hour of prayer”(Acts 3:1); “The next day, as they were walking and approaching the city, about the sixth hour Peter went up to the top of the house to pray.”(Acts 10:9).

The fact that the apostles knew and used certain hours of the day for prayer is evidenced by a book written at the beginning of the 2nd century after the birth of Christ, “The Teaching of the 12 Apostles”. She prescribes to read the Lord's Prayer "Our Father" three times a day.

Titles but on the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th hours these short divine services were received because of a slightly different calculation of the time of day than ours in ancient Israel.

In ancient Israel the night was divided into four "guards"(the sentries guarding the settlement changed), a day, in accordance with the solar circle, - for four hours(changes in the movement of the sun relative to the earth), which are called "1st", "3rd", "6th" and "9th". The 1st hour corresponds to our seventh hour in the morning. 3rd hour - nine o'clock in the morning. 6th - twelve o'clock - noon. 9th hour - three o'clock in the afternoon.

Usually the hours are made in the following order. 1st hour - at the end of the All-Night Vigil, after Matins; 3rd and 6th hours - immediately before the Liturgy; The 9th hour according to the Charter must be read at the beginning of the All-Night Vigil, before Vespers, but in many parish churches it is not performed.

9th hour

So, let's start with the first liturgical hour, which is used in the temple. Because church liturgical day begins in the evening (vespers), That first(not in an arithmetic or chronological sense) the hour is the 9th. He is also the first in the spiritual sense.

We know for sure from the Holy Gospel that the Savior died on the cross at the ninth hour (the third afternoon in our reckoning). Therefore, the prayer memory of the 9th hour is dedicated to the death on the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, as well as His descent into hell. Therefore, the prayers of this hour are mournful, but at the same time, there is already an emerging Paschal joy in them, because the Bright Resurrection of Christ will happen very soon. That's why 9th hour And precedes all other daily services: Vespers, Matins, 1st, 3rd, 6th hours, Liturgy. After all, the church veil is torn in two, and humanity gets the opportunity to enter paradise. The era of the New Testament is coming - the era of salvation. Mankind is taking a new step towards God, Who has brought it as close as possible to Himself.

1st hour(after the dismissal of Matins) 3rd hour(Before Liturgy) 6th hour(after the prayer of the 3rd hour) 9th hour(before Vespers)
Sanctifies with prayer the day that has already come. (7 am). The expulsion from Paradise of Adam and Eve and the presence of Christ at the trial of Caiaphas are recalled. The service reminds us of the suffering of the Lord at the trial of Pilate and Herod, from the 3rd to the 6th hour, and the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles at the third hour of the day. (9 am) We remember the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Noon) We remember the death on the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. (15 hours).

1st Hour

The 1st hour, with God's help, was established later than the other three. As Professor of the Kyiv Theological Academy Mikhail Skaballanovich writes in his book "Explanatory Typicon": “The 1st hour was established in the 4th century. in Palestinian monasteries for ascetic purposes…” Those. The church of apostolic times did not know him. It was already established with the development of monasticism in the 4th century in connection with asceticism and ascetic discipline such as: "sleep less and pray more." The fact is that to aggravate the prayer vigil, the ancient monks broke the night Also for several guards, during which they stood up for prayer. The last prayer watch of the night is the 1st hour.

In addition, it also carries a spiritual gospel meaning. The Church recalls in his prayers the taking of Christ into custody in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Sanhedrin, the suffering and beating of the Savior by the Pharisees' servants, the trial by Pilate and the unjust death sentence pronounced on the Righteous.

3rd Hour

Main but the commemoration of the 3rd hour is the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Most Holy Theotokos and the apostles, which happened exactly at the third hour ( cm. Acts. 2:15). As well as the way of the cross of Christ to Golgotha, which also took place about the third hour and later.

6th Hour

Commemoration of the 6th hour - the Crucifixion of the Lord and God and our Savior Jesus Christ. The execution took place, according to the Holy Gospel, precisely at the twelfth hour of the day.

Thus, we see that the divine services of the Hours are devoted primarily to the Passion of Christ and are called upon to prayerfully awaken in a person the spiritual vision of the Cross, Death, the Resurrection of Christ, as well as the birthday of the Church, one of the main events in our history - Holy Pentecost. Many holy fathers said that the remembrance and living of the heart, the inner person of Passion Week is very saving and beneficial. It unites the human soul with Christ and revives it to life. The Holy Apostle Paul also reminds us of this: “If we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him…”(Rom. 6:8).

Because the memories of the Liturgical Hours are connected with the Passion of Christ, there is no singing in these prayers, only reading, which is less solemn and more mournful.

Watch Structure

So, the structure of the Clock ... It is typical for all four, and, based on this, each hour takes about 12 minutes.

Psalms form the prayer basis of the Hours(on each - three), as well as chants of the current day - troparia and kontakia.

In the prayers of the Hours after the "hat" or right after "Come Let's Bow" there are 3 selected psalms (they are different for each hour), followed by troparia (special prayers) dedicated to the memory of the day, the event being celebrated or the saint (s). This is followed by special prayers "Theotokos" dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos. “Mother of God” also has its own for each hour. Then "The Trisagion of Our Father"(see any Orthodox prayer book: the beginning of morning prayers). Next, a special kontakion prayer, dedicated to the memory of the day. Then 40 times “Lord, have mercy”, the prayer “Even for any time”, priestly dismissal (for the 3rd and 6th hours it is “Through the prayers of our holy fathers ...”, and for the 9th and 1st it is "God, have mercy on us...") and the prayer of the hour(to each his own).

The clock always begins with the prayer "Come, let us worship" which is a kind of confession of our faith in the Holy Trinity, they continue with psalms, and after them with New Testament prayers, which shows a deep organic relationship between the Old Testament and New Testament Churches. The troparia and kontakia of the day are also mounted in the clock - that is, special short prayers dedicated to the event celebrated on this day or the saint commemorated. The central part of the clock, according to the will of the holy apostles, is the reading of the prayer "Our Father". Deep penitential prayer "Lord have mercy" , recurring 40 times and a prayer "Like for all time" telling us that we must worship God and glorify Him at all times and at every hour. Then release and prayer of the hour. All the psalms and prayers of the liturgical hour were chosen by the holy fathers with God's help in such a way as to remind us of the above-mentioned memories of the hour. An example of this is the 50th psalm at the third hour, the verses of which “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me.” as if they are directly telling us about the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles. And in Great Lent at this hour, the troparion directly says about the remembered event: “Lord, even Thy Most Holy Spirit at the third hour, sent down by Thy apostles, Him, the Good, do not take away from us, but renew in us, praying to You.”

Incidentally, the Hours undergo changes throughout the liturgical year. In Great Lent, readings of kathismas are added to them, the prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian "Lord and Master of my life..." certain troparia. On Holy Easter and Bright Week, the structure of hours changes by 90%. Then they include hymns glorifying the Bright Resurrection of Christ: the troparion and kontakion of Easter, the hymn “Seeing the Resurrection of Christ”, etc. Due to the special solemnity of the holiday Easter Clock often not read, but sung.

In addition, on the eve of such great holidays as the Nativity of Christ and Holy Theophany (Baptism of the Lord), great clock. They have the usual structure of the divine services of the hours, with the only difference being that the Old Testament readings of paroemia, the Apostle, the Holy Gospel are read on them. In Rus' they are often called Royal Hours. This is a historical name, as they were often attended by monarchs.

In ancient times, the Clock was served as it should be - at 7 and 9 in the morning, at 12.00 and 15.00. But, unfortunately, for a modern person with his haste and busyness, such a schedule is not suitable. Cause now Vespers begins at the 9th hour, and Matins ends at the 1st hour. A The 3rd and 6th hours join the beginning of the Divine Liturgy with the need for the priest to have time to perform the proskomedia during the reading of these Hours.

Since the daily divine service begins from the 9th and 3rd hours, these prayers have a “cap”: a priestly exclamation "Blessed be our God...", then the usual start "King of Heaven", Trisagion, “Our Father”, “Come, let us worship…” And the 1st and 6th hours begin only with "Come, let's bow..."

I would like to say that there is nothing unimportant and unimportant in the Church. This also applies to liturgical hours. Unfortunately, one often observes how people try to arrive at the beginning of the Liturgy, but are late by hours. One gets the impression that the reader, standing alone on the kliros and reading the Hours, does this only for himself, well, for the priest, as a last resort. Many others are busy with candles, notes, conversations - in a word, the usual temple bustle. And only when the exclamation sounds "Blessed is the Kingdom..." everyone is quiet.

But after all, the 3rd hour is the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Most Holy Theotokos and the apostles, this is the way of the cross to Calvary of the Savior, and the 6th hour is the Crucifixion of Christ. He tells us that nails were driven into His pure hands for our sins. And God voluntarily gave himself over to suffering in the name of saving us all! Can we ignore it? Can we neglect the Clock?

Yes, there are extreme cases when, for objective reasons, a person was late for the beginning of the Liturgy, maybe he overslept once or several times. It happens to everyone? But there is a well-established tradition of treating the Clock as something insignificant. Type can be "cut", late. And it's already scary. After all, we are talking about the remembrance of the Passion of the Lord.

Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, let us remember that to arrive half an hour before the start of the Liturgy is not to arrive under the exclamation "Blessed is the Kingdom" late for the clock. No. This means arriving before the reading of the Hours begins. To have time to submit notes, and put candles, and kiss the holy images. And then, having recovered his breath and calmed down, begin to listen to the clock and heartily delve into the remembrance of the Passion of Christ and the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles.

After all, whoever is crucified together with our Lord Jesus Christ will rise with him.

All about religion and faith - "prayer of the ninth hour" with a detailed description and photographs.

Come let's bow three times, and bows three)

If Thy village is beloved, Lord of hosts, my soul desires and ends in the courts of the Lord. My heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. For the bird shall find for itself a house, and the turtledove for itself a nest, where lay your chicks. Your altars, O Lord God of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who live in your house, they will praise you forever and ever. Blessed is his husband, and his intercession is from Thee. Put ascensions in your hearts, in a deplorable vale, in a place where you put them. For blessing will give the law dayai. They will go from strength to strength, God will be a god in Zion. Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer, inspire God Jacob. Our protector, see God, and look at the face of Your Christ. For better is a single day in Thy courts than a thousand. I deign to rush into the house of my God rather than live in the villages of sinners. For the Lord loves mercy and truth. God bless and give glory. The Lord will not deprive those who walk without malice. Lord God of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in Thee.

Thou hast pleased, O Lord, Thy land; thou hast returned the captivity of Jacob; Thou hast tamed all Thy anger, Thou hast returned from the wrath of Thy fury. Bring us back, O God of our salvation, and bring back Your wrath from us. Food will be angry with us forever, or spread your anger from generation to generation. God, You have converted our lives, and Your people will rejoice in You. Show us, Lord, Thy mercy, and grant Thy salvation to us. I will hear what the Lord God is saying about me; as if the world speaks to His people and to His reverend ones, and to those who turn their hearts to Him. Both are near those who fear Him, His salvation, instill glory in our land. Mercy and truth have been met, truth and peace have been met. Truth is from the earth, and truth is from heaven. For the Lord will give goodness, and our land will give its fruit. Truth will go before Him, and will put its steps in the way.

Bow down, Lord, Thy ear and hear me, for I am poor and wretched. Save my soul, for I am reverend, save Thy servant, my God, who trusts in Thee. Have mercy on me, Lord, for I will cry to You all day long. Rejoice in the soul of Thy servant, for I have taken my soul to Thee. Like you are the Lord, good, and long-suffering, and many-merciful to all who call on you. Inspire, Lord, my prayer, and smell the voice of my supplication. On the day of my sorrow I called out to Thee, as if I had heard me. There is none like Thee in bosekh, Lord, and there is none according to Thy deeds. All the nations of the world will come and bow before You, Lord, and glorify Your name. For thou art great, and doing wonders, thou art one God. Guide me, Lord, in Your way, and I will walk in Your truth: let my heart rejoice, to fear Your name. Let us confess Thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Thy name forever. As your mercy is great on me, and deliver my soul from the hell of the underworld. God, transgressors rise up against me, and a host of powerful ones seek my soul, and do not offer Thee before them. And You, Lord my God, are generous and merciful, long-suffering and many-merciful and true. Look upon me and have mercy on me, give Your power to Your servant, and save the son of Your servant. Make with me a sign for good, and let those who hate me see and be put to shame; like you, Lord, help me, and comfort me.

Glory, and now. hallelujah (thrice). Lord have mercy (thrice). Troparion according to the charter.

Is it then fasting, we use this troparion, tone 8: Even at the ninth hour, for the sake of the flesh, you tasted death, mortify our wisdom of the flesh, Christ God, save us.

May my prayer draw near before Thee, O Lord; give me understanding according to Thy word.

May my petition enter before Thee, O Lord, deliver me according to Thy word.

Glory, and now. For us, for the sake of being born of the Virgin, and having endured the Good, having refuted death by death, and the resurrection is manifest like God, do not despise them with Your own hand, show Your philanthropy to the Merciful, accept the Mother of God who gave birth to You, I pray for you, and save, Savior ours, people having sinned.

Whether there is fasting, there is reading. Is the same: Do not betray us to the end, for the sake of Your name, and do not destroy Your covenant, and do not leave Your mercy from us, Abraham for the sake of Your beloved, and for Your servant Isaac, and Your holy Israel. Same, Trisagion. And according to our Father, kontakion day, or holy.

Is it then fasting, with the verb of this troparia, tone 8: Seeing the robber of the Head of life hanging on the Cross, and saying: if God was incarnate in heaven, Even crucified with us, the sun hid its rays from the sky, below the earth trembled tremblingly, but Who for all endure, remember me Savior, when you come in the kingdom of Si.

Glory. In the midst of the two thieves, the measure of the righteous has found Your Cross: for the first I descend into hell with the burden of blasphemy, for the other I am relieved from sin to the mind of theology. Christ God, glory to Thee.

And now. The Lamb and the shepherd and the Savior of the world, on the Cross, seeing the birth of Thee, saying tears: the world rejoices, accepting Your deliverance, but My womb burns, seeing Your crucifixion, endure for all, Son and my God.

Is the same, Lord have mercy (40). Izhe for all time. Lord have mercy (thrice). Glory, and now. The most honest cherub. Bless in the name of the Lord, father. For the prayers of our holy fathers. Amen. And we make three great bows, with the usual prayer: Lord and Master of my life. And other throwing (12). So prayer. Lord God, Father Almighty.

Is there a great fast, and we bow down to prayer: Master God, Father. we do not speak, but we sing on both faces: In the kingdom of Si.

Is it possible, besides fasting, that we say this prayer: Vladyka, Lord Jesus Christ, our God, long-suffering about our sins, even until this hour, bring us, hanging on the life-giving tree, to the prudent robber, Even though you made the entrance to Paradise, and destroyed death with death, cleanse us sinners, and your unworthy servants. For we have sinned and are lawless, and we are not worthy to raise up our eyes, and raise ourselves to the heights of heaven, but then we leave the path of Your righteousness, and we walk in the wills of our hearts, but we pray Your goodness: spare us, Lord, according to the multitude of Your mercy, and save our name For your sake, for the sake of the saint, as if our days have disappeared in the bustle. Deliver us from the hand of the enemy, and forgive us our transgressions, and put to death our carnal wisdom, let us put off the old man, and put on the new, and we will live with You, our Lord and Benefactor, and so by Your command subsequently, we will achieve eternal rest, where there is for all who have fun, a home. Thou art truly true joy, and joy to those who love Thee, Christ our God, and we send glory to Thee, with the Father without beginning, and with the Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever and ever, amen.

ninth hour

The ninth hour is dedicated to the remembrance of the very death of the Savior on the cross, since it was around this hour that Christ made His penultimate exclamation on the cross: “God, My God, forsake me,” which was immediately followed by the Savior getting drunk with vinegar and (after an unspecified period of time) followed by an exclamation, cited only by St. ev. Luke: "Father, in your hands I commit my spirit" (23:46), with which the Lord betrayed his spirit.

Therefore, starting from the first moment of the service, the “Teaching Message” (with the Missal) exhorts us to remember at 9 o'clock the last events of the life of Christ.

The commandment to pray at the 9th hour, in remembrance of the humiliation of the Lord, is clearly stated in the 34th chapter. VIII book. Decrees of the Apostles (II-III centuries). The psalms of this service are chosen by St. Pachomius the Great (+348), and the troparia and prayer, now read at the ninth hour, belong to St. Basil the Great (329-379).

Since the ninth hour belongs to the previous church day, the troparion and kontakion are read on it for the expiring day. For example, in the Typikon, regarding the ninth hour before the week of St. Thomas, it is indicated that the troparion “From on high, thou hast descended,” and not “Sealed to the tomb,” is laid on it.

The ninth hour is usually celebrated before Vespers.

During the entire period of Great Lent, the 3rd and 6th hours are celebrated together, and then the 9th hour follows, after which the Pictorial and Vespers are sung.

On the eve of the Nativity of Christ and Theophany, the 9th hour is celebrated together with all other hours. Together with 3 and 6 o'clock (and separately from Vespers), 9 o'clock is celebrated on Wednesday and Cheese Friday, if the fore-feast of the Presentation or a temple feast takes place on these days.

The ninth hour is sometimes celebrated in the temple, sometimes in the porch, as is clearly stated in ch. 1 and 9. Typicon. On the days of fasting, 9 hours are supposed to be performed in the temple (Tipikon, study on November 14 and Monday of the 1st week of Great Lent).

The order of the ninth hour is as follows: the priest, without a phelonion, but in a stole, with the royal doors closed and the veil drawn, goes out onto the salt and gives an exclamation: "Blessed is our God." Reader: "Amen." “Glory to you. Your God, glory to you”, “King of Heaven”. Trisagion according to “Our Father. “. The priest, standing on the salt, pronounces the exclamation: “For yours is the kingdom. “. After the exclamation “As Yours is the Kingdom. ” The priest goes through the southern doors to the altar. Reader: “Amen”, “Lord, have mercy” (12 times), “Glory now”, “Come let us worship” (three times) and then we read the three psalms of the ninth hour:

1. “If Thy village is beloved, Lord” (Ps. 83);

2. “Thou hast blessed, O Lord, Thy land” (Ps. 84);

3. “Incline, O Lord, Thy ear” (Ps. 85). After the psalms: "Glory now." Alleluia (thrice), “Lord, have mercy” (thrice), “Glory” is a troparion to the saint from the Menaion, “And now” is the Theotokos of the hour: “Be born of the Virgin for our sake. “, the Trisagion according to “Our Father. ” After the exclamation of the priest: “For yours is the Kingdom. The reader reads the kontakion to the saint from the Monthly Menaion. “Lord, have mercy” (40 times), “Like for all time. “, “Lord, have mercy” (three times), “Glory now”. “The most honest Cherubim ..”, “Bless in the name of the Lord, father.” Priest: “God, have mercy on us. “. Reader of the prayer of the hour: “Lord Lord Jesus Christ our God. “

In this prayer, the Church asks the Lord, who was crucified on the cross and opened paradise to the thief, so that He would kill our carnal passions and honor us with eternal bliss in heaven.

This concludes the order of the ninth hour. And so, in the course of the ninth hour, the Holy Church reminds us of the hour of the death on the cross of our Savior Jesus Christ. This is especially clearly stated in the Great Lenten troparion of the ninth hour: “Even at the ninth hour you tasted death for the sake of the flesh, put to death our wisdom in the flesh, Christ God, and save us.” In the psalms of this hour, the fruits of the death of the Son of God on the cross are prophetically depicted, such as: the remission of sins to repentant sinners, the reconciliation of man with God, and God's mercy to the sinner.

Order of 9 o'clock

B.1. IN 1. CHIEF SEQUENCE OF THE CLOCK

The composition of the church service includes:

In ancient times, they were performed separately from one another at the hours appointed by the Church, but later, out of condescension to the infirmities and needs of Christians, the Church allowed them to be performed at three times of the day: in the evening, in the morning, and around noon.

The Church begins the cycle of daily worship in the evening due to the fact that the church day for us Christians, like for Jews, begins in the evening, because. the passage of time, according to the teachings of St. The Scriptures began in the evening. The composition of the evening service of the Russian Orthodox Church includes:

9 o'clock according to the Church reckoning corresponds to the 3rd hour in the afternoon. This liturgical time is dedicated to the remembrance of the very death of the Savior on the cross. It was around this hour that Christ made His penultimate exclamation on the cross: “My God, My God, why did You leave Me?” . ev. Luke: "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit" (23:46), with which the Lord betrayed his spirit.

Therefore, starting from the first moment of the service, the "Teaching Message" (at the Missal) exhorts us to remember at 9 o'clock the last events of the life of Christ.

The commandment to pray at 9 o'clock, in remembrance of the humiliation of the Lord, is clearly stated in chapter 34 of the 8th book of the Apostolic Decrees (2-3 centuries). The psalms of this service are chosen by St. Pachomius the Great (348), and the troparia and prayers now read at 9 o’clock belong to St. Basil the Great (329-379).

Because The 9th hour belongs to the previous church day, then the troparion and kontakion are read on it of the expiring day. For example, in the Typikon, regarding the 9 o'clock before the week of St. Thomas, it is indicated that the troparion "Thou hast descended from on high" is laid on it, and not "To the sealed tomb."

The 9th hour is usually celebrated before Vespers.

During the entire period of Great Lent, the 3rd and 6th hours are celebrated together, and then the 9th hour follows, after which the Pictorial and Vespers are sung.

On the eve of the Nativity of Christ and Theophany, the 9th hour is celebrated together with all other hours. Together with 3 and 6 o'clock (and separately from Vespers), 9 o'clock is celebrated on Cheese Wednesday and Friday, if the fore-feast of the Presentation or a temple feast falls on these days.

The 9th hour is sometimes celebrated in the temple, sometimes in the vestibule, as is clearly stated in the 1st and 9th chapters of the Typicon. On the days of fasting, 9 hours are supposed to be performed in the temple (Tipikon, following on November 14 and Monday of the 1st week of Great Lent).

Order of 9 o'clock

The priest, without a phelonion, but in an epitrachelion, with the royal doors closed and the veil drawn, goes out onto the salt and proclaims: "Blessed is our God."

Reader: "Amen." "Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee", "King of Heaven...", Trisagion after "Our Father...".

The priest, standing on the salt, utters an exclamation: "As Yours is the kingdom ...", after which he leaves through the southern doors to the altar.

Reader: "Amen", "Lord, have mercy" (12 times), "Glory now", "Come and worship" (three times). Then 3 psalms 9 hours are read:

1. "If Thy village is beloved, Lord" (Ps. 83);

2. "Thou hast blessed, O Lord, Thy land" (Ps. 84);

3. "Incline, O Lord, Thy ear" (Ps. 85).

After the psalms: “Glory now…”, Alleluia (three times), “Lord, have mercy” (three times), “Glory” – a troparion to the saint from the Menaion, “And now” – the Theotokos of the hour: “Be born of the Virgin for our sake…” , Trisagion according to "Our Father ...".

After the priest’s exclamation: “For yours is the Kingdom…” the reader reads the kontakion to the saint from the Monthly Menaion… “Lord, have mercy” (40 times), “Lord, have mercy” (thrice), “Glory and now." "Honest Cherubim ...", "Bless in the Name of the Lord, Father."

At the end, the reader says the prayer of the hour: "Lord Lord Jesus Christ our God ...".

In this prayer, the Church asks the Lord, who was crucified on the cross and opened paradise to the thief, so that He would mortify our carnal passions and honor us with eternal bliss in heaven.

This concludes the order of making 9 hours.

So, in the wake of the 9th hour, the Holy Church reminds us of the hour of the death of our Savior Jesus Christ on the Cross. This is especially clearly stated in the Great Lenten troparion of the 9th hour: "Even at the ninth hour, for the sake of the flesh, you tasted death, put to death our wisdom in the flesh, Christ God, and save us."

In the psalms of this hour, the fruits of the death of the Son of God on the cross are prophetically depicted, such as: the remission of sins to repentant sinners, the reconciliation of man with God, and God's mercy to the sinner.

The 1 hour service is the 1st service of the day. It is, as it were, a continuation of the morning service, and, except for a few days of the year, it is always performed immediately after Matins.

Hours are of 2 types: with psalms (3-psalm hours) and without psalms (Easter).

The type of three-psalm hours is divided into 3 subtypes:

3) great (for Christmas Eve).

Interhours, although they are types of hours, now they have no independent meaning and are not included in the number of daily services. In ancient times, they were part of the circle of ancient clocks.

Prayers for 1 hour are found in the Followed Psalter and in the Book of Hours, at the end of Matins, in the daily service.

At the end of Matins, after singing: “Affirm God…” the priest draws the curtain of the Royal Doors, and the reader reads: “Come, let us worship…” and the prescribed psalms for 1 hour.

If, however, Matins is performed polyeleos or with great doxology, then 1 hour is read after the complete dismissal of Matins and the usual many years.

Hour 1, as directly adjacent to Matins and, as it were, finally completing it, begins with "Come, let us worship" (three times).

This is followed by the three-psalm characteristic of the clock; in 1 hour it consists of 3 psalms:

5 ps. "Give me my words, O Lord..."

89 ps. "Lord, Thou hast been a refuge for us..."

The three-psalm is followed by "Glory, and now", "Alleluia" (thrice), again "Glory" and a troparion to a feast or a saint, then "And now" - Theotokion: "What shall we call thee ...".

Then the "Trisagion", "Our Father ..." and the kontakion of a feast or saint. “Lord, have mercy” (40 times), followed by the common prayer of Compline, Midnight Office and the Hours “Before all time ...” This prayer is followed by three times: “Lord, have mercy. Glory, and now,” then: “Most honorable cherub ... "Bless in the name of the Lord, father."

The priest, leaving through the northern doors (in one stole, which again, as it were, signifies the humility of the Intercessor, as in the reading of the lamp and morning prayers), says: "God, have mercy ...".

The priest continues the prayer, in which he glorifies Christ: "Christ, the true Light ...".

The choir glorifies the Queen of Heaven with a solemn anthem "To the Chosen Governor ...".

Behind this solemnly thankful and victorious song, the priest pronounces: "Glory to Thee, Christ God ..."

The priest says 1 hour leave.

The singing of the "Choose Governor" in essence does not refer directly to the 1st hour (it is not in the Charter), but is a brief prayer addition that has become an integral part of the following of the 1st Hour.

In practice, there is a tradition, due to which, on great holidays, instead of the "Choose Governor ...", the kontakion of the holiday is sung. (For example, on January 7, instead of "The Chosen Voivode", "Virgin Today" is sung, etc.).

If the daily Matins were performed, then at 1 o'clock there is a great dismissal, but if Matins was performed with a great doxology or polyeleos, then at 1 o'clock a small dismissal is pronounced.

At the celebration of 1 hour, it is remembered, as it is said in the Service Book, "how our Savior was led into the porch from Caiaphas to Pilate in the first hour of the day, like a villain and benefactor bound, and how there the whole world Judge from the lawless bishops and elders of the Jews was scolded and from an unrighteous judge condemned byst" (Teaching news in the Service Book).

In addition to these memories, the general nature of this service is to express gratitude to the Lord for the day that has come, a request, a prayer for guidance on the path that is pleasing to God during the coming day. In connection with the time of the morning and with the indicated memories, certain psalms are set at 1 Hour, in which the morning prayer is set forth, full of hope in God and thanksgiving, in 5 ps. the properties of the enemies are revealed, by which the Savior was slandered and condemned; depicts the eternity and immutability of the Lord God and the brevity and variability of our life, like the morning (Ps. 89). Then it is said that when the morning of eternity comes, then the Lord will destroy all sinners so that in the holy city, i.e. heavenly Jerusalem, there were only saints (Ps. 100).

1 hour stands at the beginning of daily services already in the most ancient Greek. monuments of the 8th century, i.e. almost from the time of the emergence of the daily liturgical cycle. The sources of the 1 hour service go back to even more ancient times. About the prayer meeting of the day, St. Basil the Great and the psalms cited by him are precisely the psalms of the 1st hour. There is information about the service of 1 hour, dating back to the time of the life of St. Savva the Sanctified. The connection of 1 o'clock with matins is mentioned by Nikon Chernogorets (11th century). In the West, 1 hour becomes known from the 6th century. in the Rules of Saint Benedict.

In the Sinai and Ethiopian Books of Hours, according to E. Diakovsky, 1 hour is directly adjacent to the morning, and the rest of the Hours, together with the Pictorial Hours, are combined into a special rank of Hours. From this it becomes clear that the 1st Hour is organically connected with Matins and that its fulfillment follows immediately after it. For our time, these indications have a deep historical basis.

As for the song “To the Chosen Voivode…”, this text, according to some liturgists, most likely belongs to George Pisida (7th century), because it begins the well-known akathist to the Mother of God, which belongs to the authorship of George Pisida doubt. The historical circumstances that prompted George Pisida to write this song and akathist are believed to have been the events of the war of 626, when the Byzantine Empire victoriously repulsed the united forces of the Asian peoples from the walls of the capital, among which were the "Tauro-Scythians" - Russian Slavs.

K. Nikolsky holds a different opinion. He says that the "Choose Governor ..." was compiled by the Greeks at the time when they got rid of the attack of the Kiev princes - Askold and Dir (866), who were defeated on their ships by a storm near Constantinople while immersing the robe of the Mother of God in the sea. The princes of Kyiv, struck by this miracle, were soon baptized.

Psalm 83:

TO O beloved of Thy village, O Lord of hosts! My soul desires and ends in the courts of the Lord, my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. For a bird will find a house for itself, and a turtledove a nest for itself, where it lays its chicks, Thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who live in Your house, they will praise You forever and ever. Blessed is the husband, he has his intercession with You; put ascension in your heart, put it in a deplorable vale, put it in a hedgehog place, for the blessing will be given by the legislator. They will go from strength to strength: the God of gods will appear in Zion. Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer, inspire, O God of Jacob. Our protector, see, O God, and look upon the face of Thy Christ. For it is better than a single day in Your courts more than a thousand: deign to rush in the house of my God more than live in the villages of sinners. As the Lord loves mercy and truth, God will give grace and glory, the Lord will not deprive the good of those who walk with malice. Lord God of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in Thee.

Psalm 84:

B Thou hast lamented, O Lord, Thy land; Thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob; Thou hast tamed all Thy wrath, Thou hast returned from the wrath of Thy fury. Bring us back, O God of our salvation, and turn away Thy wrath from us. Food forever angry at us? Or stretch out Your wrath from generation to generation? God, turn to revive us, and Your people will rejoice in You. Show us, O Lord, Thy mercy, and grant Thy salvation to us. I will hear what the Lord God speaks about me: as the world speaks to His people, and to His reverend ones, and to those who turn their hearts to Him. Both those who fear Him, His salvation, are near, instill glory in our land. Mercy and truth have been met, truth and peace have been met. Truth is ascended from the earth, and truth is from Heaven, for the Lord will give goodness, and our land will give its fruit. Truth will go before Him, and will put its steps in the way.

Psalm 85:

P bow down, O Lord, your ear, and hear me, for I am poor and wretched. Save my soul, for I am reverend: save Thy servant, my God, who trusts in Thee. Have mercy on me, Lord, for I will cry to You all day long. Rejoice in the soul of Thy servant, for I have taken my soul to Thee. Like You, Lord, are Good and Meek, and Many-merciful to all who call on Thee. Inspire, O Lord, my prayer, and listen to the voice of my supplication. On the day of my sorrow, I cried out to Thee, for thou hast heard me. There is none like Thee in bosekh, O Lord, and there is none according to Thy deeds. All the nations, the firs you created, will come and worship before You, Lord, and glorify Your name, as You are Great, and work miracles, You are the only God. Guide me, O Lord, in Your way, and I will walk in Your truth; let my heart rejoice in fearing thy name. Let us confess to Thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Thy name forever: for Thy mercy is great upon me, and Thou hast delivered my soul from the hell of hell. God, transgressors rise up against me, and a host of powerful ones seek my soul, and do not offer Thee before them. And You, Lord my God, Generous and Merciful, Long-suffering, and Many-merciful and true, look upon me and have mercy on me, give Your power to Your servant, and save the son of Your servant. Make with me a sign for good, and let those who hate me see and be put to shame, because You, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

And again: Make with me a sign for good, and let those who hate me see and be put to shame, for Thou, O Lord, hast helped me and comforted me.

IN Lord, Jesus Christ, our God, long-suffering about our sins and even until this hour, leading us, hanging on the Life-Giving Tree, to the prudent thief who entered paradise, you made the entrance and destroyed death with death: cleanse us, sinful and unworthy servant of Yours For we have sinned and lawless and we are not worthy to lift up our eyes and look at the heights of Heaven, for we will not leave the path of Thy righteousness and walk in the wills of our hearts. But we implore Your immeasurable goodness: spare us, Lord, according to the multitude of Your mercy, and save us in Your Name for the sake of the Holy One, as if our days have disappeared in the vanity, deliver us from the hand of the enemy, and forgive us our sins, and put to death our carnal wisdom, yes Let us put on the old man, and let us put on the new and live for Thee, our Lord and Benefactor. And so, by Your subsequent command, we will reach eternal rest, where there is a dwelling for all those who rejoice. Thou art truly the true joy and joy of those who love Thee, Christ our God, and we send glory to Thee with Thy Father without beginning, and the Most Holy, and the Good, and Thy Life-giving Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever, amen.

THE SEQUENCE OF THE CLOCK

HOUR ONE

The same psalms:

Inspire my words, Lord, understand my calling. Listen to the voice of my supplication, my king and my God: I will pray to you, Lord. In the morning hear my voice, in the morning you will appear and see me: Like God, do not want iniquity, you are: the crafty will not settle down with you, the lawless will be below your eyes. Thou hast hated all those who do iniquity. Destroy all those who tell lies: the Lord abhors a man of blood and a flatterer. But with the multitude of your mercy, I will enter your house, I will bow to your holy temple in your fear. Lord, guide me in your righteousness

,For my enemy's sake make my way right before you. As if there is no truth in their mouths, their heart is vain, their throat is open to the grave, their tongues are lying. Judge them, O God, that they fall away from their thoughts: according to the multitude of their wickedness, forgive me, as if I had grieved you, Lord. And let all who trust in you rejoice, rejoice forever, and dwell in them, and those who love your name boast of you. Like you bless the righteous, Lord, like a weapon of good will crowned us.

Lord, Thou hast been a refuge for us forever and ever. Before even the mountains did not exist, and the earth and the universe were created, and from age to age you are. Do not take a man away into humility, and said thou: turn, sons of mankind. Like a thousand years before your eyes, Lord, like yesterday, like a mimoide, and the watch of the night. The humiliation of their summer will be: the morning, like grass, will pass by, the morning will flourish and pass away: it will fall away in the evening, it will harden and wither. As if your anger disappeared, and I was embarrassed by your fury. Thou hast laid our iniquities before thee: our age is to enlighten thy face. As if all our days were impoverished, and your anger disappeared. Our summers are like a spider web: the days of our years, in them are seventy years, and if they are strong, eighty years, and multiply their labor and illness: as if meekness has come upon us, and we shall be punished. Who knows the power of your wrath, and from your fear, wipe out your fury; Say taco to me with your right hand, and those who are bound in heart in wisdom. Turn, O Lord, how long; and beg be on your servants. In the morning we will be filled with your mercy, O Lord, and we will rejoice and be glad. All our days we will rejoice, for the days in the lower you humbled us, the summer in the lower we saw evil. And look upon thy servants, and upon thy works, and instruct their sons: And be the grace of the Lord our God upon us, and correct the work of our hands upon us, and correct the work of our hands.

Psalm 100

Mercy and judgment I will sing to you, Lord: I will sing and understand in the way blameless: when you come to me; passing in the innocence of my heart, in the midst of my house: I do not set before my eyes a thing that transgresses the law, those who commit crimes hate. Do not cling to me with an obstinate heart: I do not know the evil one who deviates from me. He who slanders the secret of his sincere, this exile: with a proud eye and an insatiable heart, do not eat with this. My eyes are on the faithful lands, I plant with me: walk along the blameless path, this serving me. Do not live in the midst of my house, create pride: speak unrighteously, do not correct before my eyes. In the morning beat all the sinful earth, hedgehog trumpet from the city of the Lord all those who do iniquity.

Glory, and now:

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee God.

Come, let us bow down and bow down to Christ himself, our king and our God.

The same psalms:

Hear, O Lord, my truth, heed my supplication, inspire my prayer, not in the mouth of flatterers: My fate will come from your face: let my eyes see right. Thou hast tempted my heart; As if my mouth did not speak human deeds, for the words of your mouth, I kept the paths cruel. Make my steps in thy paths, lest my steps be moved. I cried out, as if you heard me, O God, incline your ear to me, and hear my words. Surprise your mercy

,save those who trust in you from those who oppose your right hand: Save me, Lord, like the apple of your eye, cover me in your blood. From the face of the wicked, who have sharpened me: strike my soul, obsessed. Shut up your fat: their mouth speaks pride. Those who cast me out now bypassed me, laying their eyes on the ground. Explaining me like a lion is ready to catch, and like a skimen, dwell in the secret. Rise up, O Lord, I go ahead and sing to them: deliver my soul from the wicked: your weapon is from the enemy of your hand. Lord, from the little ones from the earth, I divided them into their stomachs, and their wombs were filled with your secret ones: they were filled with sons, and left their remains as a baby. But I will appear to your face in truth, I will be satisfied, when I appear to your glory.

To you, O Lord, I have lifted up my soul, my God, on thee of hopes, so that I will not be put to shame forever, let my enemies dare me lower: For all who endure you will not be ashamed. Let the wicked be put to shame in vain. Let yours, O Lord, tell me, and teach me your paths: Guide me to your truth and teach me: for you are my God saved, and I endured you all day. Remember your bounties, O Lord, and your mercies, as if they are from the ages. Do not remember the sin of my youth and my ignorance: according to your mercy, remember me, for the sake of your goodness, Lord. Good and right is the Lord, for this sake He will lay the law on those who sin on the way. He will guide the meek to judgment, he will teach the meek in his own way. All the ways of the Lord, mercy and truth, to those who seek his covenant and his testimonies. For the sake of your name, Lord, and cleanse my sin: there are many. Who is man, fear the Lord; He will lay the law on his way, whom you please. His soul will dwell in the good, and his seed will inherit the earth. The power of the Lord is those who fear him, and his covenant will show them. I will take out my eyes to the Lord, for he will uproot my nose from the snare. Look upon me and have mercy on me, for I am the only begotten and poor. The sorrows of my heart are multiplied, take me out of my needs. See my humility, and my work, and leave all my sins. See my enemies, as if they have multiplied, and hate me with unrighteous hatred. Save my soul and deliver me, so that I will not be ashamed, as if I trusted in you. I will cleave to me without malice and righteousness, as if I have suffered thee, Lord. Deliver, O God, Israel from all his sorrows.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Wash me most of all from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity, and my sin before me is taken out. I have sinned against you alone and done evil before you: as if you were justified in your words and conquered when you judge. Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and my mother gave birth to me in sins. Behold, thou didst love the truth, Thy obscure and secret wisdom revealed to me. Sprinkle me with hyssop and I will be cleansed; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Give joy and gladness to my ears: and the bones of the humble will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins, and cleanse all my iniquities. Heart

create in me cleanly, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Give me the joy of Your salvation, and confirm me with the dominating Spirit. I will teach the wicked in Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from the blood, O God, God of my salvation, my tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will proclaim your praise. As if you would have desired sacrifices, you would have given them: you do not favor burnt offerings. Sacrifice to God - the spirit is contrite: the heart is contrite and humble, God will not despise. Please, O Lord, with Thy favor Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, the offering and the burnt offering; then they will offer calves on Your altar.

HOUR SIX

Come, let us worship our God, kings.
Come, let us bow down and bow down to Christ, the king of our God.
Come, let us bow down and bow down to Christ himself, our king and our God.

God, save me in your name, and judge me in your strength. God, hear my prayer, listen to the words of my mouth. Like strangers have risen against me, and strong men have sought my soul, and have not offered God before me. Behold, God helps me, and the Lord is the protector of my soul. The evil one will turn away my enemies, consume them with your truth. I will devour you with my will, let us confess your name, O Lord, for it is good. As if you delivered me from all sorrow, and my eye looked at my enemies.

Inspire, O God, my prayer, and do not despise my prayer: Beware of me, and hear me: grieved by my sorrow, and I was troubled by the voice of the enemy and from the sinner's oppression: As if you had deflected iniquity against me, and in anger I was enmity. My heart is troubled in me, and the fear of death attack me: Fear and trembling come upon me and the darkness flogs me. And rech: who will give me a krill like a dove, and I will fly and rest. Behold, he ran away, and settled in the wilderness. The teas of God, who saves me from cowardice and from the storm. Drown, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen iniquity and suffering in the city. Day and night it will go around and on its walls: iniquity and labor in its midst, and unrighteousness: And there is no shortage of interest and flattery from its stacks. As if the enemy had reproached me, he would have endured the wretchedness: and if he hated me, he would speak against me, hiding from him. But you, indifferent human being, my lord and my well-known, You also thoroughly enjoyed brashen with me: in the house of God we walked like-minded people. May death come upon them, and may they descend into hell, live: as wickedness is in their dwellings, in their midst. I called out to God, and the Lord heard me. Evening and morning and noon we will sing, and I will proclaim, and my voice will hear. He will deliver my soul with peace from those who approach me: as in many things I am with me. God will hear and humble me, this age before: there is no change for them, as if they were not afraid of God. Stretch out your hand to recompense, defiling his covenant. Separated from the wrath of his faces, and their hearts draw near: softening their words more than oil, and that is the essence of the arrow. Throw up your sorrow on the Lord: and he will nourish you: he will not give rumors to the righteous in an age. But you, O God, bring them down to students of corruption: Men of blood and deceit shall not halve their days

:but, O Lord, I trust in thee.

Alive in the help of the Most High, in the blood of the God of heaven will be settled. The Lord says: Thou art my intercessor and my refuge, my God, and I trust in him. As if he will deliver you from the net of a stalker, and from a rebellious word: his splash will overshadow you, and you hope under his wings: his truth will be a weapon. Do not be afraid of the fear of the night, from the arrow flying in the days, From the things in the darkness of the transient, from the scum and the demon of the noonday. A thousand will fall from your country, and the darkness at your right hand will not come close to you: Both look at your eyes, and see the reward of sinners. For you, O Lord, are my hope: you have made your refuge on the highest. Evil will not come to you, and the wound will not approach your body: Like an angel of your commandment about You, save you in all your ways: They will take you in their hands, but not when you stumble your foot on a stone: Step on the asp and basilisk, and cross the lion and a snake. As if I trusted in me, and I will deliver, and: I will cover and, as if I knew my name. He will call to me, and I will hear him: I am with him in sorrow, I will crush him, and I will glorify him: I will fulfill him with long life, and I will show him my salvation.

Glory, and now:

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God. Thrice. Bows 3.
Lord have mercy. Thrice.

God Lord sung with the verb: Glory, theotokian:

As if there were no imams of boldness for our many sins: you, who are born from you, pray, Virgin Mother of God: a motherly prayer can do much to the mercy of the Lord. Do not despise sinful prayers, all-pure one, as if he is merciful and saves the mighty one, who also suffers for us.

hallelujah, verb present troparion, in voice 2:

Even on the sixth day and hour, on the cross of nailing, in paradise, the bold sin of Adam, and tear the handwriting of our sins, Christ God, and save us.

Verse 1:Inspire, O God, my prayer, and do not despise my prayer.
Verse 2:I called out to God, and the Lord heard me.

To the same verse we sing:

Even on the sixth day:all to the end, and bow once.

Glory, and now, the Theotokos:

If there is a forty-cost service, the troparion of prophecy, prokeimenon and paremia are read here.

Thou hast made salvation in the midst of the earth, O Christ God, on the Cross, Thy most pure hands have stretched out Thy hands, gathering all tongues, calling out: Lord, glory to Thee.

We worship Your most pure image, good one, asking forgiveness of our sins, Christ God: by will, thou blessed the flesh to ascend to the cross, but deliver, even if thou createdt from the work of the enemy. With that thankful cry to Ty: Thou hast filled all the joys, our Savior, who came to save the world. There is a source of mercy, vouchsafe us mercy, Mother of God, look at people who have sinned, show your strength as ever: trusting in you, rejoice, we cry out to you, like sometimes Gabriel, the incorporeal archangel.

This is spoken on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
On Wednesday, and five, instead of:

Mercy exists:says:

Holy Cross, tone 2:

Thou hast been glorified, virgin Mother of God, we sing to you: with the cross of your son, cast down hell, and dead death, let us kill the east and belly, perceive paradise, ancient pleasure. Thus, thanksgivingly, we glorify, as the sovereign Christ our God, and the only one who is many-merciful.

If your village is beloved, Lord of hosts. My soul desires and ends in the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. For a bird will find a house for itself, and a turtledove a nest for itself, where it lays its chicks: send yours, O Lord of hosts, to my king and my God. Blessed are those who live in your house: they will praise you forever and ever. Blessed is the husband, he has his intercession with you, ascension in your heart. Put it in a deplorable vale, in a hedgehog place: for the blessing will be given by the legislator. They will go from strength to strength: the God of gods will appear in Zion. Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer: give ear, O God of Jacob. Our protector, see, O God, and look on the face of your Christ. Like a better day

one in your courts more than a thousand: deign to rush in the house of my God more than live in the villages of sinners. As the Lord loves mercy and truth, God will give grace and glory: the Lord will not deprive the good, who walk without malice. Lord God of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in you.

Thou hast pleased, O Lord, thy land; thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob. You left the iniquities of your people, you covered all their sins. You tamed all your anger, you returned from the anger of your fury. Bring us back, O God of our salvation, and turn your wrath away from us. Food is forever angry with us; or spread thy wrath from generation to generation; God, turn to revive us, and your people will rejoice over you. Show us, O Lord, your mercy, and grant us your salvation. Hear what the Lord God is saying about me

:as if the world speaks to its own people, and to its own reverend, and to those who turn their hearts to it. Both those who fear his salvation are near, instill glory in our land. Mercy and truth have been met, truth and peace have been met. Truth ascended from the earth, and righteousness from heaven. For the Lord will give goodness, and our land will give its fruit. Truth will come before him, and will put his feet on the path.

Incline, O Lord, your ear, and hear me, for I am poor and wretched. Save my soul, for I am reverend: save your servant, my God, who trusts in you. Have mercy on me, Lord, for I will call upon you all day long. Rejoice the soul of your servant, as if you took my spirit to you. Like you, Lord, are good and meek, and many-merciful to all who call on you. Inspire, O Lord, my prayer, and listen to the voice of my supplication. On the day of my sorrow, I called out to you, as if you had heard me. There is none like you in bosekh, O Lord, and there is none according to your deeds. All the nations, the fir-trees thou hast made, will come and bow before thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name: Thou art great, and do wonders, Thou art one God. Guide me, O Lord, in thy way, and I will walk in thy truth; let my heart rejoice, to fear thy name. Let us confess to you, Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify your name forever: For your mercy is great on me, and you delivered my soul from the hell of hell. God, transgressors rise up against me, and a host of powerful people seek my soul, and do not offer it to you before them. And you, Lord my God, generous and merciful, long-suffering and many-merciful, and true: Look upon me, and have mercy on me: give your power to your servant, and save the son of your servant. Make with me a sign for good: and let those who hate me see and be ashamed, because you, Lord, helped me, and comforted me.

Master Lord Jesus Christ our God, long-suffering for our sins, and even until this hour, bringing us, hanging on a life-giving tree, to a prudent robber, who made the entrance to Paradise, and destroyed death by death, cleanse us sinful and unworthy servant of Yours: sinned more and lawless, and not we

worthy to lift up our eyes, and look at the heights of heaven, for we leave the path of Thy righteousness, and walk in the wills of our hearts. But we pray to Your immeasurable goodness: spare us, Lord, according to the multitude of Your mercy, and save us in Your name for the sake of the saint, as if our days had disappeared in the vanity. Deliver us from the hand of the enemy, and forgive us our sins, and put to death our carnal wisdom, but putting aside the old man, we will put on the new, and we will live for You, our master and benefactor: and so by Your subsequent command, we will reach eternal rest, where there are all those who rejoice housing. Thou art truly true joy, and the joy of those who love Thee, Christ our God, and we send glory to Thee, with Thy Father without beginning, and Thy most holy and good and life-giving Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever, amen.

As the father is generous to the sons, the Lord has mercy on those who fear Him.As He knows our creation, I will remember as the dust of Esma: A man, like grass, his days, like a green flower, will bloom like that; as if a spirit had passed through it, and no one would know his place, nor would he know it. The mercy of the Lord from age to age is on those who fear Him, and His righteousness is on the sons of sons, who keep His covenant, and remember His commandments, do I. The Lord has prepared his throne in heaven, and his kingdom possesses all. Bless the Lord, all His angels, mighty in strength, who do His word, hear the voice of His words. Praise, my soul, the Lord. I will praise the Lord in my stomach; I will sing to my God while I am. Do not rely on princes, on the sons of men, in whom there is no salvation. His spirit will go out and return to his own land: in that day all his thoughts will perish. Apostle to Colossaeum, credit. 258:

Brothers, put on, therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, in the wombs of bounty, goodness, humility, meekness and long-suffering: Accepting each other and forgiving yourself, if anyone has a commandment against whom: as Christ has forgiven you, so are you. Over all these, acquire love, even though there is a constellation of perfection. And let the peace of God dwell in your hearts, in the same and call quickly in one body: and be grateful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing yourself in psalms, and singing and spiritual songs, in grace singing in your hearts of the Lord.

Gospel of Mark, pt. 37:

The Lord said: whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and come after me. Whoever wants to save his soul, he will destroy it: and whoever destroys his soul for the sake of me and the gospel, he will save her. What good is it to a man, if he gains the whole world, and brushes off his soul; Or what dest man

betrayal of my soul; Even if he is ashamed of me, and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, and the son of man will be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. And he said to them: Amen, I say to you: for they are not from those standing here, who do not have the taste of death, until they see the kingdom of God come in power.

And if there is a fortecost, when combined, both faces sing with sweet singing:

Remember us, Lord:And the bow is one for each. Anyway, soon.

Glory, and now:

Remember us, Lord, when you come into your kingdom.
Remember us, Lord, when you come into your kingdom.
Remember us, holy one, when you come into your kingdom.
The face of heaven sings to Thee, and says: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts, fill heaven and earth with Your glory.

Poem:Come to him and sieve, and your face will not be ashamed.
The face of heaven sings to Thee, and says: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts, fill heaven and earth with Your glory.

The face of the holy angel and archangel, with all heavenly powers, sings to Thee, and says: holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts, heaven and earth are filled with Your glory.

And then there is the Liturgy, the abie:

Relax, leave

I believe in one God the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only begotten, who was born of the Father before all ages. Light from light, true God from true God, begotten, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, who was all. For us for the sake of man and for our sake of salvation, who descended from heaven, and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became human. crucified

for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried. And he rose again on the third day, according to the scripture. And ascended into heaven, and sitting at the right hand of the Father. And the packs of the coming with glory, to be judged by the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke the prophets. Into one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. I look forward to the resurrection of the dead: And the life of the age to come. Amen.

Weaken, leave, forgive, God, our sins, voluntary and involuntary, even in word and in deed, even in knowledge and not in knowledge, even in days and nights, even in mind and in thought, forgive us all, as good and philanthropist.

This poor man called, and the Lord heard and, and saved him from all sorrows. The angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear him, and deliver them. Taste and see how good the Lord is: blessed is the man who trusts the nan. Fear the Lord, all his saints, for there is no hardship for those who fear him. The riches of the impoverished and drunkard: those who seek the Lord will not be deprived of any good. Come, children, listen to me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Who is a man, if you want your belly, love to see good days; Keep your tongue from evil, and do good: seek peace, and marry and. Calling on the righteous, and the Lord heard them, and deliver them from all sorrows. The Lord is near the brokenhearted, and saves the humble in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, and the Lord will deliver them from them all. The Lord preserves all their bones, not a single one of them will be broken. The death of sinners is cruel, and those who hate the righteous will sin. The Lord will redeem the souls of his servants, and all who trust in him will not sin.

Glory, and now: and there is a release.

The priest without a phelonion, but in an epitrachili, with the royal doors closed and the veil drawn, goes out onto the salt and proclaims: "Blessed is our God."

Reader: "Amen." “Glory to You, our God, glory to you”, “King of Heaven…”, Trisagion according to “Our Father…”.

The priest, standing on the salt, pronounces the exclamation: "As Yours is the kingdom ...", after which he goes into the altar through the southern doors.

Reader: “Amen”, “Lord, have mercy” (12 times), “Glory now”, “Come and worship” (three times). Then three psalms of the ninth hour are read:

1. “If Thy village is beloved, Lord” (Ps. 83);

2. “Thou hast blessed, O Lord, Thy land” (Ps. 84);

3. “Incline, O Lord, Thy ear” (Ps. 85).

After the psalms: “Glory now ...”, Alleluia (three times), “Lord, have mercy” (three times), “Glory” - a troparion to the saint from the Menaion, “And now” - the Theotokos of the hour: “Be born of the Virgin for our sake ...” , Trisagion according to "Our Father ...".

After the priest’s exclamation: “For Yours is the Kingdom…” the reader reads the kontakion to the saint from the Monthly Menaion… “Lord, have mercy” (40 times), “Lord, have mercy” (thrice), “Glory and now ". "The most honest Cherubim ...", "Bless in the name of the Lord, father."

Priest: "God, have mercy on us...".

This concludes the order of the ninth hour.

So, in the course of the ninth hour, the Holy Church reminds us of the hour of the death on the cross of our Savior Jesus Christ.

§ 2. Vespers
The next service after the ninth hour is vespers - a daily church service, sent, at the direction of the Typikon, “it is not enough before evening” (everyday vespers, Typikon, chapter 9), “before the sun sets” (small vespers, Typikon, chapter 1) and “there is little for the sun to set” (vespers great, Typicon, chapter 2). So, according to the difference of days, Vespers happens:

"great" performed on Sundays and public holidays;

"small", sung before Sundays and holidays, on which the all-night vigil is laid; and finally

vespers "everyday" or everyday, which actually belongs to the circle of daily worship.

The composition of the hymns set for Vespers is given in Book of hours (rites of Vespers), and the priestly prayers, exclamations and diaconal litanies are in Missal (rite of vespers).

2. 1. The service of daily Vespers

Everyday Vespers is celebrated, according to the 9th chapter of the Typicon, as follows.

After the prayer of the ninth hour: “Lord, Lord…” there is no dismissal.

The priest at the end of the prayer of the ninth hour, dressed in a phelonion and opening the veil (Typicon, chapters 7 and 9), comes out of the altar through the northern door, stands in front of the royal gates and proclaims: "Blessed is our God ...".

Reader: “Amen”, “Come, let us worship ...” (three times), after which he reads Psalm 103, called the initiatory: “ Bless, my soul, the Lord».

When the ninth hour is not observed, Vespers usually begins like this:

The priest proclaims: "Blessed is our God ...".

The reader answers: “Amen” and reads the usual beginning, that is, “To the King of Heaven ...”, the Trisagion according to “Our Father ...”, “Lord, have mercy” (12 times), “Glory now”, “Come, let us worship ...” (three times ), and then the introductory psalm.

During the reading of the preparatory psalm, the priest, standing on the salt in front of the royal doors with his head uncovered, secretly reads the seven prayers of the lamp, which are in the Missal at the very beginning of the Vespers Service. These prayers are called lamp prayers because at this time lamps are lit during the evening service in the church.

The reader, having finished reading Psalm 103, says “Glory. And now”, with the triple “Alleluia”.

After that, the priest, standing in the same place, on the salt, pronounces the great litany: "Let us pray to the Lord in peace."

If a deacon serves with the priest, then at the end of Psalm 103, he goes through the northern doors to the pulpit, bows to the priest and pronounces the great litany, while the priest goes to the altar.

At the end of the litany, the deacon also enters the altar (if the priest pronounces the litany, he leaves the altar only at the exclamation “It is fitting…”).

After the exclamation, an ordinary kathisma is read. The kathisma begins with the reading of a psalm, and not with the singing of "Lord, have mercy" (thrice) with "Glory". After reading the kathisma, a small litany is pronounced. On Sunday evenings and on holidays at Vespers it is not supposed to read kathismas.

Then the choir sings "Lord, cry out" with stichera according to the Charter. 1 “Lord, I have called” on the days of forefeast and afterfeast, as well as to the six-fold saint and on Saturday, is sung to the voice indicated in the Menaion. If the saint does not have a sign, his service does not coincide with the Sabbath service or some holiday, then “Lord, I have called” is sung to the voice of the current week of the Oktoech and the first three stichera will be taken from the Oktoech, and the rest from the Menaion. According to the Charter, the total number of stichera is six, not counting the stichera for "Glory" and "And now."

This is followed by "Glory, and now", then the Theotokos is sung, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays - the Holy Cross, which are located along with the Menaion. From Friday to Saturday on "And now" the dogmatic voice of the expiring week is sung. On the days of forefeast and afterfeast, the Theotokos is replaced by the stichera of the feast from the Menaion. Sometimes a saint has a stichera for "Glory". In this case, the Bogorodichen is taken to "And now" from the appendix of the Menaion according to the tone of "Glory".

During the singing of the stichera “Lord, I have called,” the deacon, and if there is no deacon, then the priest, performs incense (Tipikon, 2, 9, 22 chapters), first around the throne, then the high place and the entire altar. Exiting the north door to the solea, the deacon censes the holy gates, the icons of the right and left sides of the iconostasis, then the right and left choirs, the worshipers and the whole church.

After the incense of the whole church, the deacon again rises to the salt and incenses the local icons of the Savior and the Mother of God in front of the royal doors, and then enters the altar through the southern doors. In the altar, he incenses before the priest's throne, and with this he finishes the incense (Typicon, chapter 22).

After the stichera on “Lord, I have cried,” the choir sings “Quiet Light” (according to the Rule, entrance is not allowed at the daily Vespers).

If the priest serves without a deacon, then he says: “Let us attend”, “Wisdom, let us attend” and the prokeimenon of the day set for Vespers (see the Service Book, the Book of Hours, the Followed Psalter, where there is a special prokeimenon for each day of the week).

The choir sings the prokeimenon.

After the prokeimn, the reader: "Vouchee, Lord ...".

Then the priest (or deacon) pronounces a petitionary litany: "Let us fulfill our evening prayer to the Lord."

If the service is performed by a priest with a deacon, then the exclamations after “Quiet Light”, “Let’s go” and the prokeimenon are pronounced by the deacon in the altar in the High Place (near the throne). To pronounce the petitionary litany, like all other litanies, the deacon goes to the salt.

After the litanies, the exclamation of the priest follows: “For God is good and philanthropic…”.

Choir: Amen.

Priest: "Peace to all."

Choir: "And your spirit."

Deacon: Let us bow our heads to the Lord.

Chorus: "To you, Lord" (drawn out).

The priest secretly reads the prayer of head bowing. After this prayer, he proclaims: "Be the power of your Kingdom ...".

Then stichera are sung on the verse. During the period of prefeast and feast day, the stichera on the verse are taken from the Menaion, on other days, when the service is not festive, but daily, these stichera are taken from Oktoikh, where they are given for every day. On Saturday, the stichera for the martyrs are taken from the Octoechos, one verse and two stichera for “Lord, I have called” the martyr’s “Glory” to the saint, then the Theotokos is taken according to the voice of the stichera for “Glory” from the Second Appendix of the Menaion, and the Theotokos “stichera for the verse” is omitted.

After the verse stichera, “Now you let go ...” and the Trisagion according to “Our Father ...” are read. Then the priest pronounces the exclamation: "As Yours is the Kingdom...".

The choir sings the troparion.

On ordinary days, the troparion to the saint is performed, and on “Glory, and now” - the Theotokos from the lesser ones, that is, from the fourth appendix according to the voice of the troparion. During the period of pre-feast and after-feast, at first the troparion is sung to an ordinary saint, and on “Glory, and now” - the troparion of the holiday. If two saints are commemorated on the same day and each has its own troparion, then first the troparion is sung to the first saint, then “Glory” - the troparion to the second saint, and on “And now” - the Theotokos from the lesser ones, that is, from the fourth appendix according to the voice of the last troparion . On Saturday, the troparion to the saint, and on "Glory, and now" - the Theotokos Sunday according to the voice of the expiring week.

After singing the troparia, the deacon pronounces a special litany, beginning with the petition: “Have mercy on us, O God…” (this litany is found in the Missal).

At the exclamation: “Like merciful…”, the deacon proclaims: “Wisdom”.

Chorus: "Bless."

Priest: "Be blessed..."

Choir: "Affirm, God ...".

Priest: "Most Holy Theotokos, save us."

Choir: "Honest ...".

Priest: "Glory to Thee, Christ God...".

Chorus: “Glory, and now”, “Lord, have mercy” (three times). "Bless."

The priest, through the northern doors with the royal doors closed, goes out to the pulpit and, facing the people, pronounces the dismissal. 1

Leaves for each day are indicated in the Service Book, after the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.

Moreover, if the service is performed on Sunday evening before Monday, then the dismissal at the end of the daily vespers will be pronounced by the priest as follows: “Christ our True God, through the prayers of His Most Pure Mother, the Intercession of the honest heavenly powers of the incorporeal: the holy glorious and all-praise apostle: (and the saints of the temple and the day) the holy righteous God-father Joachim and Anna and all the saints, will have mercy and save us, as good and philanthropic” .

After the dismissal, many years are sung: "Great Lord ...". If, however, Matins is sent along with Vespers, as is customary in many churches, then dismissal is not said after Vespers. When the choir sings: “Affirm, O God…”, the priest utters an exclamation: “Glory to the Saints…” and then Matins begins.

After the dismissal, if one Vespers is served, the veil is drawn, but if Vespers and Matins are served, then the veil is not closed. 2. 2. Outline of the historical development of the evening service

The real order and composition of the evening service in the main parts bears the stamp of ancient times. Thus, for example, some references to the introductory psalm and to the singing of "Lord, I have cried" 2 are found in the VIII book of the Apostolic Decrees and in the monuments of the VIII-IX centuries.

From the 4th-5th centuries there is evidence of prayers of the lamp, which the priest reads in front of the royal doors. Although it is not known what their exact content was in antiquity, but from the works of St. Basil the Great, we know that in his time they were already and were called lamps.

Lamp prayers are one of the oldest, if not the most ancient part of Vespers. According to the Greek terminology, Vespers itself from the 4th century until modern times was also called "luminaire" . The prayers of the lamp are older than the preparatory psalm, with which Vespers began, and at first they belonged to the "antiphons of Vespers", that is, psalms that were sung according to verses with refrains, similarly to the refrains of modern times to "antiphons in the liturgy." This analogy is historically very important, it unites the history of both services - the All-Night Vigil and the Liturgy.

After the preparatory psalm in the Luminary Prayers, a great litany follows at the daily vespers. Great Litany It is also called "peaceful", because it begins with the expression "Peace" or, rather, "In the world."

Term "litany" - a prayer petition - very ancient, for it is already found at the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries ("Epistle to the Corinthians" by St. Clement of Rome ). In the 4th century, it was in the ancient rite of the Ambrosian liturgy that a form very close to the modern one is found. The immediate predecessors of the litanies of our time are the diaconal prayers in the Assyrian-Antiochian (3rd century) and Jerusalem (Decree of the Apostles of the 4th and 5th centuries) editions.

Expression " Packs and packs ”, which characterizes a small litany, is found in the 4th century “in the Apostolic Decrees”.

There is a mention of the 140th psalm at Vespers in the 4th century (St. John Chrysostom). Further, starting from the 5th century, references to its use at Vespers become ubiquitous in the East.

As for the anthem "Light Quiet" , then it goes back to the era of the catacombs and is, along with "Lord, I cried" and stichera, a typical feature of vespers. It is difficult to establish the lifetime of the author of the song “Light of the Quiet”. This is one of the oldest chants of primitive Christianity, which is mentioned in the Greek Book of Hours, the author of which is named saint Athenagoras (beginning of the 4th century). It is widely believed that the author of the Quiet Light is the holy martyr Athenagen (III century). Saint Basil the Great in his "Epistle to Amphilochius on the Holy Spirit"(Chapter 29) writes the following: “Although we cannot positively say who was the creator of those praises,” says Basil the Great, “which are read during luminous prayers, however, the people repeat the ancient voice and no one has yet imagined that blasphemy is pronounced when say: "Let us sing of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit." 1

The Slavic Book of Hours names the famous liturgist of the 7th century, St. Sophronia , patriarch Jerusalem . Many studies on this issue also stop at his name. However, the type of Christology in The Quiet Light and the style of dogmatic expression are very characteristic of the 2nd and 3rd centuries, Prof. M. Skaballanovich states with good reason.

As for the exclamation " Wisdom ”, then, according to the context, “Quiet Light” and “Wisdom” referred to the Lord Jesus Christ. However, such a change took place in the practice of the Old Russian Church. Then the deacon uttered the words: “Wisdom, forgive me, Quiet Light,” and the singers or the reader continued, starting from the words “Holy Glory” to the end, which is why the song itself in the 16th century. called "Holy Glory".

The prokeimenon verse from the Psalms of David, which is pronounced after the “Quiet Light,” also belongs to very ancient times.

As for the exclamation " Peace to all ”, then it is a greeting coming from the Lord Jesus Christ Himself (“Peace be with you” John 20, 19-26). In the West, it has been replaced by the Old Testament greeting: "The Lord is with you."

The exclamation "Vonmem" was already met in the monuments of the 4th century. The exclamation: “Wisdom” is of comparatively later origin. It is found in the monuments of the VIII-X centuries.

The "Apostolic Decrees" also point to the ancient pronunciation of the prayer during the evening service: "Vouchsafe, Lord ...". It passed into Orthodox Vespers in the 4th century. from the Syrian Church, where the "Apostolic Ordinances" originated, as indicated by the descriptions of the Sinai Vespers by Sophronius and John Moschus (Monument of the 7th-8th centuries).

Following the prayer "Vouchify, Lord," follows the litany, which is called "petitionary", and in liturgical books - "Let's do it." This petitionary litany is found in the Apostolic Ordinances.

At the end of the stichera, the prayer of the saint is sung or read on the verse. Simeon the God-bearer "Now let go". The text of this prayer (Luke 2:29-32) appears very early in the course of Vespers. It is already found in Vespers of the Apostolic Ordinances. It is also found in the description of the "Sinai Vespers" by Sophronius and John Moschus, as well as in the Book of Hours of the 8th century.

Very mysterious in its origin and meaning is the term "troparion" . This is a text whose content indicates the general meaning of the service, the corresponding holiday or day. The etymology of the word "troparion" is not known. In its meaning, it is identified with the concept of "voice", "melody", as M. Skaballanovich does. This is a form that conveys the content of the holiday. The troparion is dedicated to the memory of a saint or a holiday. The troparion is the main and most ancient form of church song, from which stichera, kontakion and ikos have grown.

Term "Substantial Litany" literally means "diligent, earnest supplication." The original type of this litany is close to the supplicatory one. For the first time, it takes on a form close to ours in manuscripts of the 10th century. Its current content should be attributed to the XV century. The triple "Lord, have mercy" (regardless of the litanies) is found in the Syriac and Greek lists of the liturgy of the holy Apostle James.

Thus, the order of all Vespers was handed over to the Church and preserved by her from the earliest times of Christianity. Of course, in those indications of the observance of vespers, which begin to appear from the 13th century, with indications of vespers celebrated in the Russian Church, there are some distinctive features in its composition, for then vespers was shorter than modern. But it is indisputable that these differences did not concern the essence of the rank. The rite of Vespers of the 6th century, which has survived to our time, almost does not differ (with very few exceptions) from the rite of the modern one. 1
