Before us appears a simple peasant girl, endowed with tremendous moral strength and courage, who triumphs over the prejudices of the prince and the stupidity of the boyars. Fevronia makes wise riddles and judiciously solves everyday problems. The strength of her love is so great that dry poles turn into flowering trees, and bread crumbs in the girl’s palm into fragrant myrrh and incense. The reign of Peter and Fevronia was distinguished by following the laws of God. They were cordial to everyone, "did not love only the arrogant and robbing", helped the hungry, the poor and the unfortunate. Peter and Fevronia were so devoted to each other that even death could not separate them. Indeed, true love knows no barriers! Fevronia conquers him with her selfless love. The prince prefers to leave his throne when the boyars force him to free their wives from the dominion of Fevronia, but only to be with his beloved.

One day Peter came to his brother. He was at home, in his room. Then Peter went to his daughter-in-law and saw that his brother was already sitting with her. Paul explained that the serpent could take on his form. Then Peter ordered his brother not to go anywhere, took Agrikov's sword, came to his daughter-in-law and killed the serpent. The serpent appeared in his nature and, dying, splashed Peter with blood. Peter's body was covered with ulcers, he became seriously ill, and no one could cure him. The patient was brought to the Ryazan land and began to look for doctors there. His servant came to Laskovo. Entering a house, he saw a girl weaving cloth. It was Fevronia, the daughter of a honey-dart frog. The young man, seeing the wisdom of the girl, told her about the misfortune that befell his master. Fevronia replied that she knew a doctor who could cure the prince, and offered to bring Peter to her house. When this was done, Fevronia volunteered to take on the treatment herself if Peter took her as his wife. The prince did not take her words seriously, for he did not consider it possible to marry the daughter of a poison dart frog, but promised to do so in case of healing. She gave him a vessel of her bread leaven and told him to go to the bathhouse, to anoint all the ulcers with the leaven, except for one. Peter, wanting to test her wisdom, sent her a bunch of linen and ordered her to weave a shirt, ports and a towel from it while he was in the bath. answer Fevronia sent him a stump of logs so that the prince would make a loom out of it during this time. Paul died, and Peter began to rule Murom. The boyars did not like Princess Fevronia because of her origin and slandered Peter about her. One person said, for example, that Fevronia, getting up from the table, collects crumbs in her hand, as if hungry. The prince ordered his wife to dine with him. After dinner, the princess collected crumbs from the table. Peter opened her hand and saw incense in it. Then the boyars directly told the prince that they did not want to see Fevronia as a princess: let him take whatever wealth he wants and leave Murom. They repeated the same thing at the feast of Fevronia herself. She agreed, but wanted to take only her husband with her. The prince followed God's commandments and therefore did not part with his wife, although he had to give up the principality in the process. And the boyars were pleased with this decision, because each of them wanted to be a ruler himself. Peter and Fevronia sailed away from the city along the Oka. On the ship where Fevronia was, there was another man with his wife. He looked at Fevronia with a certain thought. And she told him to draw water on the right and on the left side of the boat and drink it. And then she asked which water tastes better. Hearing that she was the same, Fevronia explained: the nature of a woman is the same, so there is nothing to think about someone else's wife. Food was prepared on the shore, and the cook cut down small trees to hang boilers on them. And Fevronia blessed these trees, and in the morning they became big trees. Peter and Fevronia were going to move on. But then nobles from Murom came and began to ask the prince and princess to return to rule the city. Peter and Fevronia, returning, ruled meekly and fairly. The couple begged God to die at the same time. They wanted to be buried together and ordered two coffins to be carved in one stone, which had only a partition between them. At the same time, the prince and princess became monks. Peter received the name David in monasticism, and Fevronia became Euphrosyne. Euphrosyne embroidered the air for the temple. And David sent a letter to her: he was waiting for her to die together. The nun asked him to wait while she finished embroidering the air. In the second letter, David wrote that he could not wait long, and in the third - that he could not wait any longer. Then Euphrosinia, having finished embroidering the face of the last saint, but without finishing the clothes, sent to tell David that she was ready for death. And after praying, they both died on June 25th. Their bodies were laid in different places: David - at the cathedral church of the Virgin, and Euphrosyne - in the Vozdvizhensky Convent. And their common coffin, which they themselves ordered to carve out, was placed in the church of the Virgin. The next morning, their separate tombs were empty, and the bodies of the saints rested "in a single tomb." People reburied them as before. And the next morning they were again found in a common coffin. Then people no longer dared to touch the bodies of the saints and, having fulfilled their will, they buried them together, in the cathedral church of the Nativity of the Virgin. Those who come to their relics in faith receive healing.

"The Tale of Peter and Fevronia" belongs to the genre of moralizing literature and describes the life of the saints of Murom, Prince Peter and his wife Fevronia. It is based on oral folk tales that reflect the views of the common people on the ideal of a pious and virtuous life.

Fight against temptation

The lives of the Murom saints can be divided into three plot and semantic blocks, which reflect the stages of personality formation on the way to the Christian ideal.

The narrative begins with the story of Peter's confrontation with the tempter, who comes to the wife of his brother Paul in the guise of her husband. This is a rather symbolic construction, which speaks of the presence in the soul of every person of two opposing principles: the righteous and the sinful.

The appearance of the tempter in the guise of a brother testifies, apparently, to the sinful thoughts of Peter himself regarding his brother's wife. But victory over the serpent, and therefore over temptation, is not easy. Evil always leaves a trace in the soul of a person - even in the event of victory over him.

"Victory over evil is victory over the bad in itself."

In the case of Peter, the consequence of overcoming the temptation is a disease that occurs as a result of the blood of the tempter getting on the body of the prince. Evil penetrates Peter's soul, and covers the body with painful scabs and ulcers.

Path to Healing

A cure for misfortune must come to the prince from a commoner. This is revealed to Peter in a prophetic dream. The wise maiden Fevronia is found in a distant village, and undertakes to heal the prince if he marries her. An unequal marriage, of course, is not included in Peter's plans. However, he makes a false promise.

But the healing that the prince receives after being treated by Fevronia cannot be final as long as he does not keep this word. Even from one untreated ulcer, the disease spreads again throughout his body.

Recovery comes to Peter only after he overcomes in his soul deceit and ingratitude towards Fevronia. Remaining faithful to his word, a person keeps clean and his own soul.

Love as a reward

What Peter perceives as the fulfillment of duty becomes for him a true reward. Fevronia becomes not only a good wife to him, but also a reliable assistant when Peter, after the death of his brother, reigns in the city.

But happiness from above is always accompanied by worries and trials. Such a test for Peter was the demand of the boyars to leave his wife, since the courtiers should not obey the commoner. But Peter prefers to renounce the throne.

In the Russian Orthodox tradition, Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom play a special role. Their life is the history of the relationship between a man and a woman who managed to overcome all the difficulties of a long and difficult earthly journey, revealing the ideal of a Christian family. Those joys and problems that they had to face eight centuries ago are relevant to this day - they lie outside of time. Holy spouses show us precisely those spiritual and spiritual qualities of a person that are necessary for everyone who is trying to build their relationship with a loved one. It is no coincidence that on the day of memory of Peter and Fevronia, July 8 is the All-Russian Day of Family, Love and Fidelity.

Finding a Destiny

Unfortunately, little is known about the meeting and acquaintance of the future spouses. This is due to the fact that no clear documentary evidence has been preserved to our time.

It is reliably known that Prince Peter ruled in Murom at the end of the 12th - beginning of the 13th centuries, and immediately after his death, he and his wife Fevronia began to be revered by the people as people of a particularly righteous life. In the 16th century, the couple were canonized as saints. The first written text dedicated to them - "The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom" - was also written approximately in the 15th-16th centuries.

Of course, "The Tale" cannot be called a biography in the full sense of the word. The author possessed fragmentary information about the life of his heroes, his text is a work of art with many folklore and legendary inclusions. However, it is important that the Tale tells about the meaning of human relations and their understanding by the characters themselves.

Apparently, not having sufficient information about what preceded the marriage of Prince Peter to the commoner Fevronia (a step completely unimaginable by the standards of society of that time), the author turns the first chapter into an allegorical tale based on popular folklore stories. It talks about Peter's battle with the monster.

Peter, protecting his brother's wife, kills a were-serpent that tried to tempt her. But during the battle, the prince himself is wounded by poison and is dying. Only the peasant woman Fevronia manages to heal him, who demands one thing: that he stay with her forever. Peter does not agree, he tries to run away from the girl, but in separation from her he falls ill again ...

It is no coincidence that this story precedes the story of the married life of Peter and Fevronia. She outlines the basis of their relationship. The prince is really wounded, but the wound, first of all, is in his soul. Obviously, this allegory is intended to express the highest meaning Christian marriage. The spiritual wound of the prince is the inferiority of human nature, which he alone is not capable of correcting. Peter's medicine is Fevronia herself, a woman sent to him by God as a life partner. Only next to her will the prince heal his soul, and only together they will be able to rise to a new spiritual level: individually they cannot find God, Who alone is able to heal the sick souls of people. Therefore, their earthly love and the Love of God are inseparable from each other.

That is why Fevronia does not let the prince go: she already feels that without her he will die. Over time, Peter himself understands this. Thus begins their joint life path and a joint path to God.

At the crossroads

Researchers agree: despite the legendary allegorical story of the acquaintance of Peter and Fevronia, the information that tells about their life after the wedding is quite reliable. And therefore, with varying degrees of probability, the events described in the second part of the Tale can be considered biographical.

Another evidence of this can be the fact that there is nothing out of the ordinary in the biography of the spouses. On the contrary, their life is close to most of us, and therefore their story will never lose its relevance.

From an everyday point of view, there was only one truly difficult moment in the fate of Peter and Fevronia. Immediately after the wedding, Prince Peter faces a dilemma: a young wife or everything else that happened in his life. Marrying a peasant woman does not find support among the urban elite of Murom. The boyars frankly declare this first to the prince, and then to Fevronia herself. They offer the prince a choice: renunciation of his title (which means exile and poverty) or divorce.

Prince Peter is hard on what is happening, he looks with horror into the future, where the unknown awaits him ... but, nevertheless, makes a choice in favor of his wife. From now on, he is no longer a prince, and together with his wife must go into exile. On the boat, the spouses are being transported along the Oka away from Murom ...

This story is resolved surprisingly quickly and safely. It turns out that Prince Peter was a key figure in the political life of an influential city. The struggle for power begins immediately, on the first night after his abdication, representatives of the boyar clans try to deliver a preemptive strike against opponents, which develops into a massacre. Realizing that all this could end in turmoil and civil war, the rulers of Murom call the prince back.

From now on, the question of his "unequal marriage" is not raised ...

The main thing in this episode is the reasons for the choice made by the spouses. Peter does not affirm "the primacy of the personal over the public", but simply follows in his actions the Christian law of love and mercy. In a difficult situation, when one can try to cheat or submit to rational, selfish considerations, the prince obeys the law of the heart. The wife was given to him by God, and he cannot go against the will of God. The prince seeks not personal benefit, profit, but tries to follow the path that leads him - together with his wife - to the Creator. Therefore, he relies on God, who gave him a wife and in whom he fully trusts.

On the first day of exile, a dialogue took place between the spouses, which is given in the Tale. “Evening was approaching, they began to moor to the shore. Then the blessed Prince Peter was overwhelmed with thoughts: “How will I continue to live, leaving autocracy by my own will?” The amazing Princess Fevronia answers him: “Do not grieve, prince: the merciful God, Creator and Provider of everything will not leave us in poverty!”

They trust in God and believe in Him - this is the most "outdated", but the most important characteristic of their relationship. Spouses - always - are guided not by selfishness and the search for what is convenient for themselves, but by faith and hope in the One who gave them life and blessed their marriage.

Forever

The last episode of the earthly life of Peter and Fevronia, according to the testimony of the author of the Tale, made a huge impression on their contemporaries. According to the then-existing tradition, in old age the couple went to a monastery in order to prepare for eternity and a meeting with the One to whom they owed their happiness. And He is ready to meet them, sending them, perhaps, the main mercy that two loving people can dream of: having lived a long life together, Peter and Fevronia die almost simultaneously.

In advance, a common coffin was prepared for the spouses, in which they bequeathed to bury themselves. However, people do not dare to fulfill this last will. Indeed, at the end of their lives, the husband and wife voluntarily parted, choosing the monastic path, which means that even after death it does not befit them to lie in the same coffin.

In the evening, Peter and Fevronya are prepared for burial separately from each other, but in the morning they lie together, in the same prepared coffin - one for two. Since then, no one has bothered the holy spouses. Even now you can bow to them in their tomb in the Holy Trinity Convent in the city of Murom ...

Peter and Fevronia lived together for many years, and, probably, they had to face a considerable number of difficulties so small and numerous that not a single chronicler would ever record them. However, it is the little things that, as a rule, become the reason for the cooling of relations between spouses. Peter and Fevronia are people who have gone through these difficulties and have retained their feelings, largely because it has ceased to be just an earthly love of two people. The love of a man and a woman grew into eternal Love that conquered death.

For the Russian Church, Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom are of great importance, first of all, as a symbol of a special spiritual path, on which the comprehension of God is inextricably linked with the relationship of two people. A man and a woman are created for each other, their combination in itself embodies the Divine plan. But this connection is impossible if a person does not see in another person a unique personality created in the image of God.

Prince Peter could treat his wife as a thing, and not as a person. Moreover, in their position, such a turn would be logical and would not meet with the condemnation of society. After all, their relationship was built four hundred years before Domostroy, at a time when its norms would have seemed ultra-liberalism. In fact, the man was the master of the woman. And even more so, the ruler of his peasant wife was an influential and powerful aristocrat - a descendant of an ancient family.

There are short episodes in the story that indicate that it was not easy for Prince Peter to break these stereotypes, even within himself. He hardly overcame arrogance towards his wife, who did not know the etiquette of the then elite *. However, he knows why he does it. Indeed, for his wife, he is not a prince, not a representative of some social stratum or class. For Fevronia, Peter, first of all, is a person.

It is widely believed that a true Christian must suffer exclusively in earthly life in order to accumulate "spiritual capital" for the life to come. However, the history of the Russian saints Peter and Fevronia refutes this message.
