The purpose of the educational dictionary is to facilitate the first steps in the assimilation of Chinese writing. The dictionary includes more than 300 most common hieroglyphs and about 2500 words and phrases. The publication is built on the model of Chinese textbooks and dictionaries for schoolchildren with an explanation of the keys arranged according to the thematic principle. The dictionary is intended for beginners to learn Chinese, as well as for all those interested in the origin of Chinese writing.

What is a Chinese character?
Unlike Russian letters, which denote certain sounds, the Chinese character denotes a concept. Since there are many more concepts than sounds, there are many more hieroglyphs than letters. Each hieroglyph records not only the concept, but also the sounds with which this concept is associated. These sounds and concepts were recorded at first with the help of simple drawings, but gradually they turned into schemes in which it is difficult to recognize the original drawing. Thus, each character can be divided into three aspects. The first aspect is graphic. This is a schematic drawing, consisting of individual features (graphic elements - see p. 7).
The second aspect is semantic. This is an aspect of a concept or meaning that can appear in different languages in more or less the same way. For example, in Chinese, Japanese, and other languages that use hieroglyphs, the hieroglyph means "man." The third aspect is phonetic. This is a pronunciation that "looks" differently in every language. The Chinese reading of each character is one and only one syllable. Graphics and semantics in the historical development of hieroglyphics act in unity. Not only a complex character as a whole, but also individual graphemes carry a certain semantic load. In the ancient language, this connection was stronger, since hieroglyphs originated from drawings. It is impossible to determine what it means by the appearance of the modern hieroglyph alone, but some hints of this can still be found.

This is one of the strange entries from my blog, an English teacher's blog. The thing is, I'm learning Chinese Chinese language courses at the Dmitry Nikitin School in Yaroslavl. I already wrote about the tactics and methods that I use to learn Chinese more effectively in a post. And today I would like to tell you about Chinese learning dictionaries, which help me in the exciting business of learning Chinese.
I must say right away that (it happened by chance) I know English quite well, and therefore most of the Chinese dictionaries that I use contain comments mainly in English.
Chinese dictionaries based on English
- user-friendly interface, in which there is a lot of “air”, and therefore the dictionary is very easy to use;
- dictionary recognizes handwriting;
- determines the order of lines in a Chinese character;
- in the dictionary, each character is voiced.
- sometimes the translation in English is inaccurate, which I learn about in class with a Chinese tutor. This, however, can be said of all Chinese translation dictionaries and can probably be explained by the huge cultural difference between European and Asian languages.
I use this Chinese dictionary to determine the etymology of a Chinese word, identify the constituent parts of Chinese characters.
Pros of this Chinese dictionary:
- you can click on a part of the hieroglyph, and you will be shown one of its components;
- the etymology of Chinese characters in English is very well disclosed.
Cons of this Chinese dictionary:
- terrible, confusing interface.
I use this Chinese dictionary to determine the sound of Chinese characters, study the order of lines in Chinese characters, determine the frequency of a particular Chinese character, memorize stable phrases with Chinese characters. The latter is especially important for me, since I believe that any foreign language should be learned by memorizing phrases and set expressions, which I write about in my notes,,.
Pros of this Chinese dictionary:

- phrases with Chinese characters are given;
- the pronunciation of both Chinese characters and their constituent parts is demonstrated;

I did not find any cons of this Chinese dictionary.
I use this Chinese dictionary to determine the dictionary meaning of Chinese characters, clarify the meaning of jargon, clarify the meaning of professional and academic Chinese vocabulary.

- very good for translating texts from Chinese to other languages and from other languages to Chinese.
This Chinese dictionary has no cons. A very useful site for learners of Chinese.
Educational explanatory dictionaries of the Chinese language
I use this Chinese dictionary to look up the meaning of Chinese idioms, set expressions and anything else that I couldn't find in other Chinese dictionaries.

I did not find any cons of this Chinese dictionary.
There is a strong opinion that learning Chinese is extremely difficult or almost impossible. Nevertheless, most linguists and experts specializing in China agree that for full communication, reading major newspapers and even many books, knowing just 3,000 characters is enough.
Each Chinese character is a separate syllable that can be pronounced in one of five keys. It is the tones of the Chinese language that are the most difficult to learn, because, as a rule, there are no analogues in the native language. Nevertheless, after a certain, sometimes short, practice, depending on the hearing of the student, there comes a moment when the tones begin to differ by ear. To write Chinese syllables taking into account tones, there is a Pinyin system based on the Latin alphabet.
First tone- pronounced high and even, like the squeak of a Morse code. Denoted by a straight line above the letter mā or simply ma1.
Second tone- ascending from medium to high, sounds like a peculiar question. Denoted má or ma2.
Third tone- low falling, and then rising to the average level. The tone is more like the Russian interjection "Well!?". Denoted mă or ma3.
fourth tone- falling from high to low, sounds like a kind of statement. Denoted by mà or ma4.
A syllable without a tone- is not indicated in any way and is pronounced without tonality.
But the specificity of China and its inhabitants is such that the reference pronunciation of syllables is not widespread everywhere, and even after driving 500 kilometers to another point in the country or talking with a representative of Chinese nationality anywhere else in the world, you risk being misunderstood. That is why the hieroglyphic record for the Chinese is as important, both within the country and abroad, as any common language of international communication in the world plays for people from other countries.
To learn Chinese, you need to know 214 key characters, according to which Chinese and Japanese characters are most often located in dictionaries. These 214 keys will help you easily navigate new and still unfamiliar hieroglyphs, quickly find their meaning in dictionaries and reference books, and even approximately guess the meaning and pronunciation of hieroglyphs.
