How to make a soft back for a baby bed. Beauty and comfort with your own hands: how to sheathe a bed with decorative fabric. Unusual bed decorating ideas - gallery

When you come home from hard work, you want only one thing: to relax in the comfort of your bedroom on your favorite bed. It is she who is one of the most important places for us, you spend a third of your life on it, so she must be comfortable.

The very first thing that catches your eye when you enter the bedroom is the bed. It should be comfortable and beautiful.

But few people think about how to ensure this pleasure for themselves. If you are an exception to them, then this recipe for making a chic bed is for you. You can imagine an unimaginable number of ideas for decorating this center of the bedroom, or you can start with the simplest - finishing the bed. But how to sheathe a bed with your own hands?

Of course, you can buy a finished bed in the store, but the range and price sometimes leave much to be desired. To resort to the services of manufacturing the desired model of a bed to order is not very profitable for our time and wallet. It remains to take this, only at first glance, a difficult and painstaking matter into your own hands.

Tools and materials

Choose a non-staining and wrinkle-resistant fabric for finishing the bed.

For this process you will need:

  • foam rubber;
  • batting;
  • plywood or hardboard;
  • construction stapler, scissors;
  • any fabric for upholstery;
  • glue.

The first thing to do is to choose the fabric for sheathing according to the size and shape of the chipboard. It should extend beyond the sheet by 20-40 cm. Thus, there will be a supply of fabric for fastening.

The same must be done with foam rubber. It should be 8-13 cm larger than the bed frame, no matter what shape it will be - round or square. At the same time, decide in advance which edge of your bed is soft or hard? Depending on this, select the upholstery option.

Workflow Features

First upholstery method

Build a bed frame and hammer plywood onto it.

On a pre-prepared bed frame, you need to stuff plywood or hardboard. At the same time, leave a distance at the top of 5-7 cm in order to fix the foam rubber. The foam rubber is stuffed on top of the plywood, while it is superimposed on the excess part of the plywood, which was left in excess. It cannot be nailed without creating a quilted effect, so use special glue.

When you have finished stuffing the foam rubber, you need to stretch the fabric on top and nail it to the bottom with staples at the bottom of the frame. In the corners, you need to collect the fabric in 2 folds, which you put on top of each other and hammer with staples at the junction. You can not stuff the staples on top of each other, otherwise it will just be a waste of them. The more you use them, the better the fabric will hold up. Try to nail the staples as far away from the edge of the fabric as possible.

Stretch the fabric over the foam rubber and secure with a stapler,

Here you can also cut out excess fabric, just do not cut too much, because then arrows and other types of damage may appear on the surface of the fabric. Or the upholstery can simply fall off the frame.

Never stretch the upholstery fabric too tightly: the seams should not be bent. If the pattern or thread strips lie flat and you can't pull the fold over the fabric, you can be sure that you did everything right. Make sure you choose the right fabric.

For different upholstery methods, there are different fabrics to suit you. If you plan to place the mattress in a recess in the frame, which is suitable for a round bed, resort to this upholstery method.

Second upholstery method

Attach the foam rubber to the prepared plywood sheet with glue or a stapler.

In the same way, as in the first case, the frame is upholstered first with plywood, and then with foam rubber. However, if your covering is not even on the sides, that is, cords and buttons will be used to create notches in the material, it is recommended to use batting. This will not create a gap at the top of the bed. Just wrap the frame in the same way, you can additionally apply more fabric at the bottom to hide the fastening points. You can nail plywood to the bottom. Thus, the frame is completely upholstered. We put the finished mattress on top and the process is over.

The process of making recesses with buttons in the lining is not particularly complicated. You can draw foam rubber in advance, nail and thread threads through the fabric, which will subsequently stretch the fabric and buttons will be sewn on top. Or you can drive decorative nails into the places marked on the fabric and simply glue the buttons. They should be the same color as the upholstery, so you can create a quilted finish.

It is best to choose materials from natural ingredients.

Upholstery fabric should be selected depending on your preferences. You can upholster beds with velor, velvet, microfiber, jacquard, flock.

If you have allergies, then sheathe the bed with natural materials, such as cotton or linen. The latter options can be used for the warm season as a removable upholstery. Cotton does not collect dust, and linen is a durable material. Upholstery colors may also vary depending on the season. In summer, light upholstery, in winter - dark. At the same time, they should be combined with curtains or decorative pillows, a bedspread.

Before you start sheathing the bed, carefully look at the frame for cracks and chips.

  1. Before removing the old coating, be sure to inspect the frame for cracks or damage.
  2. In most cases, it is recommended to change both the packing material and the springs. It may have defects, or a lot of dust has formed there from time to time. It is best to additionally fix the new filler with muslin.
  3. Choose a fabric with a protective coating. Do not upholster it with pile fabrics or elastic materials. They stretch, and you are tormented to change the upholstery. Colored prints on fabric are not recommended. With home upholstery, minor defects will be noticeable.
  4. Make a removable cover or upholstery for the bed.

Thus, it can be easily cleaned and changed in the off-season or for wear.

If you want to make a cover that can later be removed, then you need to measure the frame in advance and create a pattern according to it. Then, from pieces of fabric, sew a cover to size. For the sides of the cover, it is better to use elastic bands.

To make an upholstered bed beautiful for a long time, it is best to make upholstery in 2 layers.

The first is non-removable, and the second is as a cover. Fixed upholstery is best made from high-strength fabrics such as cotton, silk, linen, satin, bamboo fabric. In this case, the outer upholstery should be in relation to the inner one so that there is no friction or static between them.

There are a lot of major mistakes to avoid. If the frame wood is of poor quality, then cracks may occur on it, which will subsequently lead to tears of expensive fabric. Therefore, never sheathe a bed made of bad wood without upholstery base with expensive fabric or leather. For removable upholstery, carefully choose a fabric that will not stretch. Therefore, it is very important to choose a high-quality fabric for covers. If you want to wash the upholstery, then make sure that the fabric is washed well and does not lose its color.

If you want to further decorate your updated frame, make a headboard for it. In the same way, make upholstery, only for pieces of plywood folded in half, and attach it all to the bed or to the wall. And our perfect bed is ready. Thus, you can not buy a new bed, but simply update its upholstery. Having done all the work, you will look differently at your updated bed.

You started a renovation and want to create a unique atmosphere of comfort and style? Or thinking about how to transform the bedroom by adding a few decorative elements? In any case, a beautifully designed headboard will come to the rescue. Is it possible to do it yourself? What materials are needed and where to start? Let's figure it out together!

Key points when choosing a headboard

If you decide to create your own headboard for the bed, consider a few important conditions.

  1. Functionality. If you are going to use the headboard as a support for evening reading or watching movies, then it is better to opt for a soft product made from a material that is easy to clean.
  2. Room size. In small bedrooms, where it is not possible to install a bedside table, it is convenient to make a wide headboard in the form of shelves. For a spacious room with high ceilings, choose a large design.
  3. Style. If the room has a certain stylistic orientation, then the headboard should emphasize and continue it. Recreating the image of the room anew, you can make the original headboard the central part of the composition.

You can visually lengthen the walls by making the height of the headboard greater than the width.

Interior styles that successfully complement the headboard

There are many different interior styles where a headboard helps create a unique setting.

  1. Baroque. This style is associated with luxury, pomp, wealth. Brocade, velvet, fringe, stucco, wood, marble, gilding are the main materials for creating interior elements.
  2. Provence. This style comes from France and combines classic elements with rustic details. Provence is characterized by delicate pastel colors, as if burnt out from the bright sun.
  3. Vintage. A characteristic feature is the filling of the interior with various elements of antiquity.
  4. Art Deco. It combines many different directions: from the Empire to the primitives of African tribes. The lines in the interior are straight, the materials are natural. A lot of abstraction, everything is simple, but very original.
  5. Loft. A combination of elements of abandonment or incompleteness and the latest technical solutions in the interior. A lot of free space, a minimum of partitions and decorative elements.
  6. Patchwork. This style is characterized by the use of textile fabrics created in patchwork technique.
  7. Eco-style implies as many natural elements as possible in the interior. For example, solid wood bed, stone walls, vertical gardening.
  8. Ethnic style recreates the atmosphere of the dwelling of any people. For example, Japanese style, oriental or tropical.
  9. Boho. The plank figured head of the bed is always bright, but at the same time cozy. Elements of self-expression and freedom are the basis of this style in the interior.
  10. Eclecticism. The interior combines several different styles, similar in direction and united by a common decor.

Materials from which the headboard can be made

To create soft headboards, you need a rigid base: a sheet of plywood, elements of old furniture. Its appearance is not very important, it will still be hidden behind the upholstery. As the outer layer, you can use natural or artificial leather. Textiles look very nice. Velvet for baroque, golden satin for rococo, floral motifs for ethno style and so on.

Do you have unnecessary window frames? Then you can make a soft headrest out of them by adding a beautiful textile upholstery with filler.

A popular and simple technique is decoupage. With its help, you can create a unique design of the details of the bed.

The easiest option is a headboard from an old mattress. It can be embroidered in the desired style or upholstered with suitable material.

It remains only to consider mounting such a design, although if the mattress is large enough, it can simply be nailed to the wall.

The inner soft pad between the frame and the upholstery is made of foam rubber. This is the cheapest option for handmade.

Rigid headboards are most often an element of decor, with the exception of a shelf headboard. The materials for their creation may be different.

  1. One of the simplest options is a headboard assembled from ready-made purchased boards. It remains only to fix them on the wall and add a sconce.
  2. The remaining wooden pallets can turn into a stylish interior detail. This option is very simple and easy to use.
  3. It will be a little more difficult to work on creating a product on a carved metal base, to which wooden boards are attached.
  4. If you have an unused wooden gate, why not use it as an unusual piece of room decoration?
  5. Are you a professional carpenter, artist or woodcarver? Then decorating a homemade design will not give you much trouble.
  6. A mosaic headboard will give your bedroom a unique style or refresh an existing one.
  7. Metal forging is a great option for creating a backdrop for a bed.
  8. Is wicker weaving your favorite pastime? Then, perhaps, you will master this option.
  9. Do you like to knit and can you handle large-scale canvases? Then this option is just for you.

Mirrored headboards deserve special attention. They are easy to make, look luxurious, visually expand the space and make the bedroom brighter.

The bed is the visiting card of the bedroom, and the presence of a headboard gives the piece of furniture a special appeal, making the room more comfortable and atmospheric. Today soft upholstery is in demand.

Its use in the design of the headboard not only makes the bed more comfortable, but also expands the decorating possibilities. You can add such an element to the interior even when there is a standard bed in it, by making a soft headboard for the bed with your own hands and fixing it on the wall.

Upholstered headboard new design for your bedroom

The soft headrest is an element of the bed, completely covered with a fabric filled with foam rubber. You can make a bed with your own hands with a soft headboard in various styles and by many methods. If you complement the interior with pillows or an ottoman decorated with the same finish, a completely different atmosphere of the room is immediately created.

The shape and size of the headboard has a great influence on the overall style. It is necessary to take into account the volume of the bedroom so that it fits perfectly into the concept of the situation.

What style to choose for the headboard

The idea of adding a padded headrest often comes up when the bedroom is already decorated in the chosen style and you need to know how to make the headboard match it.

For a high-tech room, it is more advisable to take a fabric of any shade of gray, add decor from metal nails or LED strip.

The extravagant eclectic style allows the use of different colors and materials to create contrast.

Ethnic style suggests a cozy atmosphere, different patterns and colors. A headrest with imitation of large knitting with knitting needles, squares with unusual prints belonging to different cultures will successfully fit into such a bedroom.

A simple Scandinavian style will successfully emphasize the headboard from one large oblong or several small pillows attached directly to the wall or hung on the ledge.

The classic accepts simple shapes and soft lines, and the color of the fabric should be a continuation of the main concept of decorating the room. At the same time, an important nuance of the classics is a high headboard.

Headboard molds

When choosing the shape of the headboard, you need to understand what role it will play in the first place: it will become a bright accent or simply add coziness to the room. The standard headboard (soft) is made in the form of a rectangle or square, which can be made unique with metal frames, mirrors or lighting.

A complex geometric shape in the form of a polygon, triangle or ellipse, with a multifaceted upper edge, can attract attention.

Materials and tools

To make a soft headboard at home use:

  1. plywood;
  2. textile;
  3. foam rubber, synthetic winterizer or batting;
  4. decorative furniture carnations with large hats;
  5. wall mounts;
  6. buttons, furniture bolts with nuts, thick thread.

Other materials that will be required for some finishing methods may be added to this list.

From the tools you should prepare:

  • ruler, meter, tape measure, corner;
  • jigsaw or hacksaw;
  • scissors, clerical knife, awl, hook;
  • drill or screwdriver;
  • furniture stapler;
  • glue;
  • pencil or marker.

Master class headboard in the form of soft squares

Do-it-yourself soft headboard in the form of separate squares is the easiest to make. Even a beginner can cope with this process.

The manufacture of the back begins with measurements. The width of the product should correspond to the width of the bed or slightly exceed it. The height is determined taking into account individual preferences and the desired effect.

Consider the steps for creating a headboard of 18 squares arranged in 3 rows of 6 pieces (the size of each depends on the dimensions of the finished canvas).

First you need to purchase a sheet of plywood of the right size, mark a 3x6 grid on it and cut it with a hand saw or electric jigsaw. Then divide the fabric into squares with a margin of 5-10 cm on each side. If foam rubber is used for filling, at this stage you need to cut it into pieces equal to plywood squares.

For assembly, a piece of fabric is laid face down on a flat surface, foam rubber is placed on top of it, and then a square of plywood follows. To prevent displacement during upholstery, it is recommended to glue the foam rubber to the plywood. Do not use staples, as the filler will deform.

Armed with a stapler, it is necessary to carefully, avoiding displacement of the components, fix the edges of the fabric around the perimeter, forming folds at the corners.

If a synthetic winterizer or batting is used instead of foam rubber, plywood is immediately laid on the fabric and 3 sides are nailed with staples. Then, an element is filled through the formed pocket, trying to place most of it in the center. At the end, the open side is closed and the edge of the fabric is stapled.

Patchwork pillow headboard

How to make a patchwork headboard

It's beautiful and original.patchwork headboard, in my opinion, it will look cool in a guest or children's bedroom.

For its manufacture, you can use colorful patterned or plain fabrics. By choosing the appropriate tones, colors and patterns, such a patchwork bed construction can fit into any existing environment.

And finally, the most important thing is that a patchwork headboard is very easy to make ...

I stumbled upon a similar recipe and took the time to give it a try and I don't regret it.

The example in the photo used green, orange and white fabrics for patchwork pillows, which goes well with the overall color in the bedroom.

Pro making a backrest from patchwork pillows

We will need:

- 2 sheets of 19mm plywood
- Saw, hacksaw or something similar (you can ask your men to cut into squares)
- High density foam.
— Batting
- Glue.
- 1 meter of fabric in each of the four colors
- Scissors
- Stapler and 8mm staples
- Adhesive tape
- Screwdriver and about 35 screws
- Two mounts - hangers on the wall.

To begin with, we cut one sheet of plywood into pieces 200 x 200 or take ready-made ones.

We cut the foam rubber and batting into pieces of 200 x 200 mm.

We cut the fabric into pieces 300 x 300 mm.

Now explanations for the instruction picture:

1 We take a piece of plywood 200 x 200 mm and glue foam rubber on it so that it does not slip.

2. Add a layer of batting and fabric.

3. We get three layers laid face down on the work surface.

4. We tighten the fabric along the edges, first on one side, tuck the excess and punch it with a stapler.

We sip the fabric to a hard - but not too tight surface, first at opposite corners of the pillow. Then we fold the corners and carefully punch through.

We repeat the same from all sides and catch the pillow, making sure not to pull it too hard.

5 We do steps 1-4 and get 40 patchwork pillows.

I want to say that it is easier to work according to the template, so it turns out faster and more convenient.

6. Lay all pillows face down. We twist them around the perimeter so that they do not crumble. Then we take the second uncut piece of plywood, align it and fix each pillow with screws through it. It is necessary to mark the places where to turn the screws and choose a screw number so that they do not pierce the plywood on the pillows through, otherwise you can get hurt later.

And finally, we attach hanging loops to the back wall of the headboard and everything is ready for installation.

If you do not want to hang a patchwork headboard on the wall, you can do it differently. We attach to it two legs a little lower than the bed. And then we just install it between the wall and the regular headboard ...

The original appearance of your bedroom is guaranteed!

The background to the creation of the headboard was as follows. On the one hand, I did not want to pay several thousand euros for an Italian or French bed at all, and on the other hand, I really wanted to create something special. And then it was decided that we would make the bed ourselves. So, I'll show you how the process of creating this beautiful bed went.

I formulated the problem as follows. We need to make a bed with a fairly wide base with a removable cover and a figured headboard.
First, a whole collection of headboards was assembled. After reviewing it, a shortlist was formed, which was analyzed for the complexity of implementation on site. As a result of weighing all the pros and cons, a prototype of the future headboard was chosen.

So, now everything is in order.

1. We ordered a prefabricated MDF bed frame. Previously, two orthopedic bases were transferred to the workshop, bought in Ikea6, the dimensions of which became the starting point for calculating the dimensions.

2. Cut out the shape of the headboard.

3. We dismantle the headboard and proceed to its upholstery. Foam rubber 5 cm thick was pre-cut in the workshop according to a pattern taken from the headboard mold. We impose foam rubber to the headboard and fix it with glue (special glue for foam rubber) in several places.

4. Using a furniture stapler, we nail the edges of the foam rubber to the plywood.

5. We proceed directly to stretching the fabric. We start from the bottom to evenly fix the fabric, then we put the headboard vertically and stretch the fabric. To get around the corners, we cut the fabric.

6. We put the headboard vertically6 check the symmetry and uniformity of the tension of the fabric.
7. Let's get to work with furniture studs. First we upholster the outer edge.

8. We make markings with chalk for the second line of furniture studs. To mark this line, we first pierce it with a furniture stapler.

9. About the line indicated by the stapler, we nail the carnations of the furniture tape.

10. On the reverse side, we close everything with a technical fabric.

11. Getting to the frame. We glue the outer perimeter and the upper surface of the frame with foam rubber.

12. We make a pattern for technical fabric, which will be fixed under a finished removable cover.

13. We nail the technical fabric with a furniture stapler in the upper and lower sides of the frame.

14. We make a pattern of a removable cover.

15. We nail one part of the Velcro to the frame. The second half will be sewn directly to the cover.

16. We check how the cover sits, if necessary, correct it.

A quilted headboard cover can be made from the same fabric as the bedspread and draperies, or try a combination of several different fabrics. If you want the cover to emphasize the strict shape of the headboard, take a non-bright plain satin. The cover will look better if you make a lining of tagl, specially treated against shrinkage, which, however, can be replaced with an old sheet.

To find out what size your headboard is, take a piece of plastic wrap and attach it to the headboard, tracing around the front and back of the headboard with a marker. Then cut out both parts and get the desired size and shape, which can be adjusted depending on what you want to get. We pin the details to the fabric with needles, but remember that this is a natural size and it is necessary to make a seam allowance of 1.5-2 cm.

If your bed is close to the wall, then the back does not have to be made from the main fabric, you can replace it with a cheaper one. Then the front of the cover can be decorated as follows, draw the detail with squares or diamonds. Then, cut out the lining (you can use a padding polyester) and the bottom part, cut off all three parts and stitch along the lines you drew. You can also sew on buttons at the intersection of the lines, after stitching, cover them with the main fabric and sew on, you can sew on rhinestones or beads, as you like.

Next, measure the thickness and length along the top and side edges of your headboard. Now cut a straight strip width = thickness + seam allowance, length = length along the top and side edges + seam allowance. We sew this strip with one side to the main fabric, the other - to the fabric that will be your back.

On the front and back halves of the headboard, do not forget to add 5 cm from the bottom on each piece.

That's it, we turn it inside out and put it on, from below the fabric can be carefully lined with a stapler or hemmed with your hands. Your headboard is ready, really beautiful!!!
